The Portal Protectors team owns the employer facing portal that allows policy administrators to enroll members, manage benefit information and update member demographic data in real time. You'll be working on a fully modernized React platform; the migration is complete and now the real build begins. This role sits at the heart of Mutual of Omaha's Workplace Solutions modernization effort, connecting a sleek frontend experience to a powerful backend ecosystem built on Kafka, MongoDB, and AWS. Growth and transformation make up the majority of the work. This is not just a maintenance role.

React Java 17 Spring Boot 3 Groovy MongoDB AWS MuleSoft Kafka Kubernetes CI/CD AI-assisted development. The team actively uses AI tooling for code generation, requirement analysis, troubleshooting, and library migration. If you want to work alongside engineers who embrace AI as part of their daily workflow, this is the right place.

  • Estimated Salary: $100,000 - $140,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.

This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Design and develop React-based frontend features for Mutual of Omaha's employer-facing benefits enrollment portal, serving group administrators and policy holders
  • Build and maintain Java/Spring Boot backend services and REST APIs that integrate the portal with downstream member benefit and enrollment systems
  • Work within a SAFe Agile framework with 3-week sprints and PI planning cycles, contributing to sprint planning, backlog refinement, and daily stand-ups
  • Collaborate closely with the Member Monitoring and YOLO teams within the Member Benefit Enrollment ART to deliver seamless end-to-end workflows
  • Integrate with event-driven systems using Kafka and interact with MongoDB and PostgreSQL data layers on AWS
  • Leverage AI tooling to accelerate development, improve code quality, and support migration and modernization efforts
  • Participate in a shared on-call production support rotation - one week every nine weeks, 7x24 coverage; candidates who are not comfortable with production support should not apply
  • Embrace versatility, stepping into various roles as needed from individual contributor to leader, teacher, and mentor
  • Assess and optimize solutions, balancing performance tradeoffs to deliver maximum benefit

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • At least five years of experience in a full-stack application development environment with demonstrated strength in the following:
    • Advanced frontend experience in React framework
    • Advanced level Java/Groovy, Spring/Spring Boot 3, REST APIs, Microservices, GitHub
    • SQL and NoSQL Databases (MongoDB)
  • Proficient in developing unit tests (JUnit/Spock) and adept at version control
  • Self-motivated and intellectually curious. You don't wait to be taught everything; you find answers, think creatively, and drive your work forward
  • Collaborative and communicative. You ask questions openly, share insight freely, and support your teammates
  • Someone who is accountable and outcome-focused. You identify problems and drive them to resolution
  • Motivated to explore and adopt new technologies including AI-assisted development tools
  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do
  • Ability to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico
