What is a remote electrical engineer?

A remote electrical engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and supervises electrical systems and equipment while working outside of a traditional office or lab environment, often from home or another remote location. They use digital tools to collaborate with teams, create schematics, and solve engineering problems. This role requires strong technical skills, effective communication, and the ability to use remote collaboration software to manage projects and interact with clients or colleagues.

What does a remote electrical engineer do?

The job duties of a remote electrical engineer focus on designing electrical systems for a variety of purposes. As a remote engineer, your responsibilities typically involve using a computer to develop electrical systems for equipment, industrial machines, construction projects, computer systems, or other projects. You assess customer needs and specifications and include these factors in your design. You may interface with a technician who uses your design to build the electrical components. A remote electrical engineer can collect data on electrical operations to assess the efficiency and stability of an existing electrical system and locate potential trouble areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium), simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications (like PE licensure) is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel when collaborating remotely. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, maintaining project timelines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

How does a remote electrical engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams and other remote colleagues?

As a Remote Electrical Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with on-site teams, project managers, and other engineers through digital platforms such as video conferencing, shared design software, and cloud-based project management tools. Clear communication and proactive updates are essential to ensure alignment on project goals, design specifications, and deadlines. While you might not be physically present at job sites, you’ll often participate in virtual walkthroughs, review digital schematics, and provide real-time input during meetings. Building strong relationships with both remote and on-site team members helps ensure that your contributions seamlessly integrate with the broader project workflow.

Job description

Description
Electrical Designer
Position Description
Cushing Terrell is hiring an Electrical Designer to work across nearly every scope of electrical design, including lighting, power distribution, refrigeration electrical systems, fire alarm coordination, data systems, and battery backup, on a national portfolio of retail remodels and ground-up builds for major clients. Based on-site in our Kalispell, Bozeman, or Denver office, you will work within a collaborative team producing construction documents from initial design through QC review and construction administration.
We invest in your growth through code education, professional development, and ongoing effort to match you to the clients and project types you find most engaging. We are also a firm with genuine range: if your interests shift toward healthcare, education, or another market down the road, those opportunities exist here.
Within your first 30 days you will know how to navigate our systems and contribute billable work on a client prototype. By 90 days you are a full team member working across multiple scopes and identifying where you want to build depth. Long-term, the path forward is yours to define, whether that means becoming the go-to expert on a client relationship or stepping into a team lead role managing projects and other designers.
Position Salary Range*
The expected salary range for this position is $65,000 to $85,000 annually.
Required Qualifications**
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical building design.
  • Proficiency in Revit for electrical modeling, or demonstrated proficiency in electrical design principles with working knowledge of AutoCAD (candidates must be strong in at least one)
  • Working knowledge of NEC requirements, including branch circuit design, panel schedules, conductor sizing, and load calculations
  • Familiarity with lighting design fundamentals, including IES footcandle standards and lighting controls
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications**
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (candidates without a degree are considered with 5 or more years of relevant experience)
  • Experience with retail or commercial building projects, including large-format or big-box retail
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or intent to pursue the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  • Experience with SKM power analysis software, Bluebeam, or footcandle calculation tools such as AGi32 or similar
  • Experience with refrigeration electrical systems or advanced building automation systems

Did you know that some people hold back on applying to jobs if they don't meet 100% of the listed requirements? We don't want you to hold back! If you check most of the qualifications above and believe you could successfully do the work, we encourage you to apply!
Position Responsibilities***
  • Produce electrical design drawings in Revit and AutoCAD, including lighting plans, power layouts, panel schedules, and one-line diagrams, from initial design through QC review and permit-ready document sets
  • Perform electrical calculations including load calculations, conductor and breaker sizing, voltage drop analysis, and panel sizing to support accurate and code-compliant designs
  • Interpret client prototypes and standards to adapt designs for specific store locations, aligning client requirements with site conditions and local code compliance
  • Coordinate with Engineers of Record and fellow designers throughout the design process, incorporating redline comments and advancing drawings through multiple QC rounds to final sign-off
  • Support construction administration by responding to RFIs, reviewing permitting comments, and coordinating design changes with contractors and engineering team members
  • Conduct occasional site surveys and field walks (two to four times per year, typically two to four days each) to document existing conditions that inform remodel designs
