Remote Electrical Engineer Utilities information

What is a remote electrical engineer utilities?

Remote Electrical Engineer Utilities are professionals who design, develop, and maintain electrical systems for utility companies—such as power generation, transmission, and distribution—while working from a remote location. They use specialized software to create electrical schematics, ensure systems comply with safety standards, and collaborate with teams virtually. These engineers may also troubleshoot issues, optimize energy efficiency, and oversee projects from afar. Working remotely allows them to support utility operations without being physically present at the site, leveraging technology for communication and system monitoring.

How does a remote electrical engineer collaborate effectively with on-site utility teams?

Remote electrical engineers in the utilities sector regularly collaborate with on-site teams using digital communication tools such as video conferencing, project management software, and real-time monitoring systems. Effective collaboration involves clear documentation, frequent check-ins, and sharing technical drawings or reports electronically. Remote engineers may occasionally visit sites for major milestones, but most troubleshooting, design reviews, and status updates are handled virtually. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels are key to ensuring project success and smooth coordination.

Job description

About the job Remote | Electrical Engineer - $65-$75/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced electrical engineers with substantial expertise in electrical systems, product design, power systems, embedded systems, controls, semiconductor or PCB engineering, and complex industrial environments.
This role supports an advanced AI initiative focused on developing realistic electrical engineering evaluation tasks that reflect the design complexity, safety requirements, and production scale of major industrial, technology, and energy organisations. The project includes both US standards-based workflows involving NEC, NFPA 70, NESC, and IEEE and international workflows based on IEC standards.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Engineering Scenario Development

  • Design realistic electrical engineering scenarios involving complex systems and product-development workflows
  • Develop tasks covering circuit and system design, multi-stakeholder design reviews, manufacturing processes, and certification
  • Incorporate practical safety, reliability, regulatory, and production constraints
  • Create scenarios that require experienced professional engineering judgment
Systems Design & Engineering Analysis
  • Build tasks involving power systems and grid infrastructure
  • Develop semiconductor, PCB, embedded systems, firmware, signal-processing, and control-systems scenarios
  • Apply circuit analysis, simulation, control theory, and reliability methodologies
  • Produce reference design specifications, engineering analyses, calculations, and technical recommendations
  • Evaluate practical engineering trade-offs and system-level constraints
Engineering Tools & Standards
  • Develop scenarios involving tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence, MATLAB/Simulink, and SPICE simulation platforms
  • Incorporate enterprise PLM and EDA workflows where relevant
  • Apply EMC and EMI compliance principles
  • Use applicable US standards including NEC / NFPA 70, NESC, and IEEE
  • Apply relevant IEC standards for international engineering scenarios
  • Incorporate UL, FCC, or other applicable certification requirements where relevant
Technical Evaluation & Rubric Development
  • Draft high-quality reference outputs for complex electrical engineering tasks
  • Develop detailed evaluation rubrics reflecting professional engineering judgment
  • Distinguish practical engineering reasoning from generic textbook-level responses
  • Assess technical accuracy, feasibility, safety, reliability, and compliance considerations
  • Produce clear technical narratives for engineering leadership and stakeholder review
Ideal Profile Strong candidates may have:
  • At least 5 years of professional electrical engineering experience
  • Experience working within a major technology, industrial, energy, manufacturing, or engineering organisation
  • Direct responsibility for significant electrical designs, power systems, embedded systems, or engineering certification programmes
  • Expertise in one or more areas including power engineering, PCB design, embedded systems, controls, semiconductor systems, or signal processing
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety standards and certification requirements
  • Experience working across complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects
  • Excellent technical writing, analytical reasoning, and professional judgment
Educational Background
  • A degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is highly relevant
  • Advanced engineering education may strengthen an application
  • Professional experience involving complex electrical systems or product development is particularly valuable
  • A professional engineering credential such as PE, CEng, EUR ING, or an equivalent qualification may strengthen an application
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Altium Designer, Cadence, MATLAB/Simulink, or SPICE
  • Familiarity with enterprise PLM or EDA platforms
  • Experience with EMC or EMI compliance
  • Knowledge of NEC / NFPA 70, NESC, IEEE, or IEC standards
  • Familiarity with UL, FCC, or comparable certification frameworks
  • Experience with reliability engineering or failure-mode analysis
  • Background leading cross-functional engineering design reviews
  • Prior experience writing engineering documentation, technical training materials, or structured evaluation rubrics
Why This Opportunity
  • Apply senior-level electrical engineering expertise to advanced AI evaluation work
  • Develop realistic engineering scenarios grounded in professional practice
  • Work across electrical systems, power, embedded systems, controls, semiconductor, and product-design workflows
  • Apply US or international engineering standards to complex technical problems
  • Help improve how AI systems reason through sophisticated electrical engineering scenarios
  • Participate in flexible remote consulting work with competitive hourly compensation
Contract Details
  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Competitive rates between $65-$75 per hour depending on expertise and project scope
  • Work may include engineering scenario development, technical analysis, reference-answer creation, rubric authoring, and output evaluation
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
  • Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
