What is a remote electrical distribution designer?

A Remote Electrical Distribution Designer is a professional who creates and plans electrical distribution systems, such as power lines and substations, for residential, commercial, or industrial projects while working from a remote location. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with engineers and project managers to ensure systems are safe, efficient, and compliant with regulations. Remote designers typically communicate with clients and teams via digital platforms, allowing them to work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical distribution designer?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Distribution Designer, you need expertise in electrical distribution design, utility standards, and CAD drafting, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, GIS systems, and utility-specific platforms is essential, as are certifications like EIT or PE in some cases. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective remote communication skills help you excel when collaborating with teams and clients. These skills ensure accurate, safe, and efficient design solutions that meet regulatory standards and client needs across distributed work environments.

How does a remote electrical distribution designer typically collaborate with field teams and other project stakeholders?

As a Remote Electrical Distribution Designer, you will frequently coordinate with field engineers, project managers, and utility representatives through virtual meetings, shared project management tools, and cloud-based design platforms. Clear communication and thorough documentation are essential, since you may not visit project sites in person. You’ll often be responsible for ensuring your designs align with real-world field data and regulatory standards, which requires effective collaboration and regular feedback from on-site teams. Embracing digital collaboration tools and maintaining proactive communication helps bridge the gap between remote design work and field execution.

What is the difference between Remote Electrical Distribution Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectRemote Electrical Distribution DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires technical certifications or associate degreesBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based or remote, focused on design and draftingOffice, field, or lab settings, involved in design, analysis, and project management
Industry UsageCommon in utility companies, power distribution, and infrastructure projectsBroader industry, including power, manufacturing, and consulting

The Remote Electrical Distribution Designer specializes in creating detailed electrical distribution plans, often working remotely. In contrast, Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, including design, analysis, and overseeing electrical systems across various industries. While both roles require electrical knowledge, the Designer focuses more on drafting and technical specifications, whereas Engineers handle comprehensive project development.

Job description

Scout Space is building a new way to see and operate in space: with a new paradigm of data empowering every satellite to make space safer. We are a rapidly-growing team; we are deploying real solutions to orbit over the next 2 years; and our work will transform the face of spaceflight. We are looking for people that bring excitement and energy to our organization, are curious and eager to learn, and want to help drive our programs forward.

As aSatellite Electrical Engineer, you will focus on design, development, and integration of electronics for use in spaceborne and high-reliability environments.

Responsibilities

  • Help to lead avionics architectural decisions and identify individual electronic components
  • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation in lab environments
  • Support environmental payload testing, and write associated test cases
  • Define connector and cable harnessing for space environments
  • Support the design of digital and analog/mixed-signal electrical circuits
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, software, and systems teams to ensure cohesive hardware solutions, as well as with external stakeholders

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with designing robust grounding schemes (and strong understanding of grounding optimization tactics)
  • Experience designing harness drawings
  • Experience writing test procedures for both board and assembly level tests
  • Strong debugging skills using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers)
  • Working knowledge of hardware development for harsh environments (radiation tolerance, thermal constraints)
  • Familiarity with board-level electrical design, schematic capture, and layout tools (e.g., Altium Designer, KiCad, OrCAD)
  • Eligible to hold a security clearance

Preferred Qualification

  • 6-8 years of relevant experience in electrical design
