Remote Earth Science Research and Remote Geologist roles share similar educational backgrounds and work environments, focusing on data analysis and reporting. However, Earth Science Researchers often engage in broader research projects, while Geologists may have more fieldwork and industry-specific applications. Both roles are vital in understanding Earth's processes and are commonly sought in remote positions within the industry.

What are some common challenges faced in remote earth science research roles, and how can they be managed?

Remote Earth science research roles often involve collaborating with team members and stakeholders across different time zones and regions, which can make communication and coordination challenging. Additionally, researchers may need to rely on digital tools for data collection, analysis, and remote sensing, which requires strong technical skills and adaptability. To manage these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, regularly check in with your team, and stay updated on new software and remote data collection methods. Flexibility and proactive problem-solving are key to thriving in this dynamic environment.

What is remote earth science research?

Remote earth science research involves studying the Earth's systems—such as its atmosphere, oceans, land, and biosphere—using remote technologies. This typically means collecting and analyzing data from satellites, drones, and other remote sensing devices rather than conducting fieldwork in person. Researchers in this field analyze images, sensor data, and models to understand natural processes, track environmental changes, and inform policy decisions. Remote earth science research is essential for monitoring climate change, natural disasters, land use, and other large-scale phenomena. It allows scientists to observe areas that are difficult or dangerous to access directly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote earth science researcher?

To thrive as a Remote Earth Science Researcher, you need a strong background in geology, environmental science, or a related field, typically supported by an advanced degree (MSc or PhD). Proficiency in remote sensing software, GIS tools, data analysis platforms, and sometimes programming languages like Python or R is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective written communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills enable accurate scientific analysis, facilitate remote collaboration, and drive impactful research outcomes in the earth sciences.

Who We Are. Chevron is one of the world's leading energy companies-but what really sets us apart is how we're rethinking energy for the future. From producing oil and gas to developing lowercarbon technologies, Chevron engineers work across the full energy system to power everyday life more safely, efficiently, and responsibly. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Chevron operates around the globe and across the entire energy value chain. Learn more on our website Chevron.com.

What You'll Actually Do

Chevron is hiring Earth Science Intern roles at various operating locations across the U.S, including:

  • Houston, TX

Earth Scientists within Chevron are part of multi-disciplinary teams which vary in make-up but can include geologists, geophysicists, engineers, data scientists, and/or software developers. Earth Scientists develop technical skills in geoscience, geophysics, and petrophysics assignments focused on exploration, development, reservoir characterization, and well operations.

Earth Science interns are assigned to positions and projects that contribute value to Chevron based on degree, relevant academic preparation, previous work experience, and career objectives. Interns will be provided guidance by a supervisor and a technical mentor.

We encourage the following candidates to apply:

Geologists with specialties such as basin modeling, basin analysis, stratigraphy, structural geology, geochemistry, seal analysis, reservoir quality prediction, reservoir modeling, geostatistics, geomechanics, and fluid flow.

Geophysicists with specialties such as seismic acquisition, seismic imaging and processing, cloud computing, quantitative geophysical interpretation and attribute analysis, velocity modeling, geophysical surveillance, geophysical inversion, and potential fields.

What's Next After the Internship

Topperforming interns may be invited back-or offered a fulltime role after graduation.

New grads who join Chevron fulltime enter the Horizons Program, a structured earlycareer experience that includes:

  • Formal training + onthejob learning
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • Multiple job assignments and possible location rotations

You can build a career as a technical expert, people leader, or both.

What You Must Have

The following qualifications are required:

  • Students currently enrolled in a Master's or Doctorate Thesis program or with less than 2 years post-graduate degree experience in geology, geophysics, geological engineering, or related fields.
  • Professional/academic focus in a technical area aligned with Chevron's business needs.
  • Strong academic performance in core programs, communication, leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Position may require driving on a routine basis.
  • Ability to demonstrate The Chevron Way.

What Sets You Apart

The following are preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience with industry workflows for subsurface characterization.
  • Participation in an energy industry or sponsored university research project.
  • Practical experience with geoscience coding, data science, and/or machine learning.

Why Intern at Chevron?

  • You work on real projects, not side tasks
  • You use modern tools and cloud platforms
  • You learn how software scales in a global enterprise
  • You build skills that translate anywhere
  • You're supported by experienced engineers and mentors

  • Participation in Employee Savings Investment Plan with immediate vesting in both employee and company contributions.
    • Chevron matching contributions:
      • 4% company match for a 1% employee contribution.

  • Work schedules:
    • Flexible work schedules (5/40, 9/80, or 4/10), as determined by the work group and confirmed with the hiring manager.
  • Paid holidays depending on your work schedule.
  • Full year of service credit for each internship completion (must be re-employed within 365 days)
