About Washington & Co Inc.

Washington & Co Inc. is a strategic tax and accounting advisory firm focused on helping business owners and individuals make smarter tax and financial decisions. We go beyond basic tax preparation by ensuring each return accurately reflects the client's facts and circumstances while identifying opportunities for better planning, stronger compliance, and improved financial outcomes.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Preparer to join our remote Tax Department. This role is ideal for a tax professional with strong public accounting experience, advanced ProConnect Tax Online knowledge, and the ability to independently manage individual and business tax returns from document collection through filing.

Position Overview

The Senior Tax Preparer will prepare and review individual and business tax returns, manage assigned client work independently, communicate directly with clients, and help ensure returns are accurate, complete, and delivered on time.

This role requires strong technical tax preparation skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fully remote environment. The right candidate will be comfortable handling complex returns, multi-state filings, client communication, and review-ready work with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Preparation & Client Management

  • Prepare individual, S-Corporation, Partnership, and Corporate tax returns.
  • Manage assigned clients from document collection through filing.
  • Handle complex returns, including returns with business activity, rental activity, investment activity, multiple income sources, and multi-state considerations.
  • Review client records, prior-year returns, accounting information, and supporting documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Identify missing information, unclear items, technical issues, and inconsistencies before returns move to final review.
  • Maintain organized workpapers, notes, and supporting documentation.

Review, Accuracy & Compliance

  • Use ProConnect Tax Online confidently and efficiently to prepare and manage client returns.
  • Review prepared returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with current tax law and firm standards.
  • Review junior staff work as needed and provide clear feedback to improve accuracy and review readiness.
  • Identify and resolve preparation issues before they affect clients or delay filing.
  • Support timely e-filing, return assembly, and completion processes.
  • Help refine internal preparation and review procedures to improve accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.

Client Communication & Planning Awareness

  • Communicate directly with clients regarding missing documents, open items, return status, and next steps.
  • Provide clear, professional, and timely updates to clients and internal team members.
  • Manage client relationships independently while escalating complex matters when appropriate.
  • Identify potential tax planning opportunities during return preparation and communicate them to the Tax Planning team.
  • Support a client experience that is accurate, responsive, and professional.

Workflow & Team Support

  • Manage multiple client files and deadlines with urgency and accountability.
  • Follow firm workflows, checklists, task systems, and documentation standards.
  • Support process improvements that reduce errors, improve review readiness, and increase efficiency.
  • Assist with training, mentoring, and development of future tax staff as needed.
  • Stay current on tax law changes, IRS updates, and preparation requirements.

Qualifications
Required

  • Minimum 5 years of public accounting tax experience.
  • Strong ProConnect Tax Online experience.
  • Experience preparing individual tax returns independently.
  • Experience preparing business tax returns, including S-Corporation, Partnership, and Corporate returns.
  • Experience handling complex tax returns and multi-state filings.
  • Experience reviewing returns and identifying issues before final review.
  • Ability to independently manage a client portfolio with minimal supervision.
  • Strong client communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to identify technical issues and resolve or escalate them appropriately.
  • Ability to identify tax planning opportunities and communicate them to the appropriate team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment.
  • Ability to learn firm systems, workflows, and technologies quickly.

Preferred

  • CPA or EA.
  • Ability to sign returns.
  • Significant return review experience.
  • Experience with high-net-worth individual tax returns.
  • Experience with QuickBooks, ClickUp, Excel, Corvee, or similar tools.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or supporting junior tax staff.
  • Experience working in a remote professional services environment.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership of assigned client work and follows through.
  • Can independently prepare and manage individual and business tax returns.
  • Works efficiently and confidently in ProConnect Tax Online.
  • Can handle complex returns and multi-state filings.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with clients and team members.
  • Identifies issues early and helps move work forward without unnecessary delays.
  • Understands that tax preparation is not just form completion, but an accurate reflection of each client's facts and circumstances.
  • Recognizes potential planning opportunities and escalates them appropriately.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, fully remote environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 (based on experience)
