What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Drone Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Drone Designer, you need strong expertise in aerodynamics, mechanical/electrical engineering, and CAD modeling, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with design software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, experience with embedded systems, and knowledge of drone regulations are essential technical qualifications. Problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective communication help you innovate and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing safe, efficient, and commercially viable drone solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What are some common challenges faced when collaborating with cross-functional teams in remote drone design roles?

In remote drone design roles, professionals often collaborate with engineers, software developers, and project managers across different locations. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication of complex technical concepts and design requirements, which can be difficult without face-to-face meetings. Coordinating across time zones and aligning on project milestones also requires strong organizational skills and effective use of collaboration tools. Regular virtual check-ins, shared documentation, and visual collaboration platforms are essential for maintaining team cohesion and project momentum.

What is the difference between Remote Drone Design vs Remote UAV Engineer?

AspectRemote Drone DesignRemote UAV Engineer
Required CredentialsDesign certifications, CAD skills, drone technology knowledgeEngineering degrees, aeronautical or electrical engineering background
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, remote collaboration, CAD softwareRemote or on-site labs, testing facilities, engineering teams
Industry UsageProduct development, custom drone design, prototypingUAV system development, flight testing, technical analysis

Remote Drone Design focuses on creating and developing drone concepts using CAD and design tools, often involving prototyping. Remote UAV Engineers work on the technical engineering aspects, including system integration and testing. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ mainly in their focus—design versus engineering implementation.

What is remote drone design?

Remote drone design involves creating and developing drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) that can be operated from a distance using wireless communication technologies. Professionals in this field work on the hardware, software, and user interfaces needed to ensure drones perform specific tasks safely and efficiently. This includes designing the drone's structure, selecting components like cameras and sensors, and programming the control systems for remote operation. Remote drone designers often collaborate with engineers, software developers, and end-users to meet the unique requirements of different industries such as agriculture, surveying, or delivery.

Job description

Who we are

Neros is a defense technology company rebuilding America's drone industrial base. We design and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are tested in combat, iterated at startup speed, and built at massive scale. Our team culture is fast, hands-on, and obsessed with closing the gap between design and deployment.

As drones transform the character of warfare, Neros is delivering the systems the West needs to compete on the modern battlefield and deter the adversaries of democracy. We're hiring engineers, operators, and builders who want to move fast, take on extreme ownership, and get capability into the hands of warfighters in months, not years.

What you will be doing

Build and manage relationships with Army units to accelerate drone adoption on the modern battlefield. You'll own the full sales cycle from initial contact through contract execution and thus coordinate complex field demonstrations, navigate DoD procurement processes, and work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and finance to deliver capability at speed.

You should have the following

  • 5+ years in defense business development, program management, or military operations
  • Active TS/SCI clearance or ability to obtain one
  • Direct experience working with Army units, programs, or operations
  • Strong technical fluency with unmanned systems or defense hardware
  • Willingness to travel as needed to military bases and field locations
  • Exceptional communication skills with military and civilian stakeholders

Nice to have

  • Prior Army service
  • Proven track record closing DoD contracts ($500K+)
  • Experience with DoD procurement vehicles
  • Experience with SOCOM
  • Relationships within Army acquisition or requirements community
  • FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate
  • Experience running field demonstrations or training events
  • Knowledge of spectrum management and DoD frequency coordination

US Salary Range

$140,000 - $160,000 USD

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros' total compensation package.

We're an equal opportunity employer. We welcome all applicants without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
