What does a Remote Director of Machine Learning do?

A Remote Director of Machine Learning leads teams of data scientists and engineers to develop, implement, and oversee machine learning solutions for an organization, all while working remotely. They are responsible for setting the strategic direction for ML projects, collaborating with stakeholders, and ensuring that models align with business objectives. This role typically involves both technical leadership—such as reviewing algorithms and architectures—and managerial duties, such as mentoring staff and managing budgets. Working remotely, they use digital collaboration tools to communicate, monitor progress, and deliver results effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Director of Machine Learning, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Director of Machine Learning, you need advanced expertise in machine learning algorithms, data science, and leadership, typically supported by a graduate degree in a related field and extensive experience in deploying ML solutions. Familiarity with tools like Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, cloud platforms, and experience with project management systems is essential, and certifications such as AWS Certified Machine Learning can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to mentor and manage distributed teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital to successfully lead innovative ML projects, align technical teams with business goals, and drive impactful outcomes in a remote environment.

How does a Remote Director of Machine Learning typically coordinate and lead distributed teams across different time zones?

As a Remote Director of Machine Learning, effective coordination of distributed teams requires strong communication strategies, including regular video meetings, clear documentation, and use of collaborative project management tools. Leaders in this role often establish overlapping core hours and leverage asynchronous communication to accommodate various time zones. They focus on aligning goals, fostering a culture of transparency, and ensuring continuous progress through well-defined milestones. Building trust and maintaining team engagement remotely are common challenges, but successful directors prioritize mentorship, feedback, and virtual team-building activities to create a cohesive work environment.

Position Overview

Autodesk is shaping the future of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry by building the operational product data platform that powers the industry's design, collaboration, and lifecycle workflows. We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to lead the team responsible for the AEC Data Model, the core platform underpinning these capabilities across our product portfolio.

Reporting to the VP of AEC Data, as Sr. Director of Engineering within Autodesk's AEC Data team, you will lead the evolution and engineering delivery of the AEC Data Model, enabling the next generation of product data capabilities for the Autodesk Forma Industry Cloud. This platform is centered on operational product data and systems of record, while also interfacing with analytics and machine learning systems and evolving to support broader data and intelligence use cases. In this role, you'll work with leaders from Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Autodesk Platform Services, Autodesk Construction Solutions, Generative Design, and Forma Design to unify complex, historically fragmented design data across Autodesk's ecosystem into a coherent, scalable platform.

The successful candidate is an experienced engineering leader with a passion for large-scale systems and building high-performing teams. They combine deep technical expertise, innovative engineering practices, and leadership presence to drive alignment and execution across product, platform, and ecosystem teams.

As this role oversees a global organization, you will work across multiple time zones and travel up to 20% for team offsites and internal and customer events.

The role can be based in the US, Canada, or the UK with Eastern time zone preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering execution of the AEC Data Model roadmap, translating product strategy into scalable, high-quality systems
  • Build and evolve the engineering organization to deliver predictable execution, high quality, and operational excellence
  • Hire, mentor, and retain the next generation of engineering leaders
  • Serve as a senior leader within the AEC Data team, shaping organizational strategy, prioritization, execution, and innovation across the portfolio
  • Partner with product, platform, and ecosystem teams to drive adoption of the AEC Data Model across Autodesk's product portfolio, influencing architecture and data standards across independent teams and taking ownership of critical cross-product initiatives
  • Define the long-term evolution of Autodesk's AEC domain data model and influence broader technical strategy around domain data, interoperability, and platform architecture
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and engineering practices, identifying and driving adoption of innovations that materially improve platform capabilities and developer productivity

Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, with 5+ years leading managers and senior leaders across global teams
  • Demonstrated ability to adopt and scale AI-driven engineering practices to accelerate delivery and improve developer effectiveness
  • Proven track record of owning and delivering large-scale, complex systems or platforms with measurable business impact
  • Experience building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations, including org design and leadership development
  • Established history of driving operational excellence (quality, reliability, scalability, and execution predictability)
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud platforms, high-scale transactional environments, and modern software architecture patterns
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align product, platform, external, and executive stakeholders
  • Ability to understand complex business requirements and quickly and iteratively execute against them in a highly matrixed environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or leading domain-specific data platforms (e.g., AEC, BIM, GIS, manufacturing, or other complex object models)
  • Experience with schema evolution, versioning, and backward compatibility in long-lived, large-scale systems
  • Understanding of how operational product data interfaces with analytics, AI, and downstream data platforms
  • Experience influencing industry standards, data interoperability frameworks, or open ecosystems
  • Track record of driving platform adoption across large, federated organizations
  • Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related field
