As an unbundled carrier, we work actively with third-party administrators (TPAs) and self-administered accounts to assist in guiding claims to a successful resolution. As an excess carrier, the catastrophic claims we handle keep our group challenged, but the uniqueness provides plenty of growth opportunities.

Role Description:

As the Director, Claims, you will play a critical leadership role overseeing Excess Workers’ Compensation claims operations while managing and developing a team of Claims Managers. In this role, you will be responsible for handling complex excess workers’ compensation claims from assignment through closure, while providing strategic oversight of claim evaluation, reserving, settlement negotiations, litigation management, and third-party administrator (TPA) performance. You will collaborate closely with underwriting, medical management, reinsurance, and executive leadership to ensure high-quality claim outcomes, effective risk management, and exceptional service to our customers.

You will lead regional claims operations by directing claim assignments, conducting quality reviews and audits, overseeing aggregate claim administration, monitoring reserve and settlement authority compliance, and supporting the professional growth of claims staff. Your expertise will help drive operational excellence, maintain strong broker and client relationships, and contribute to the continued success of Safety National’s Workers’ Compensation Claims organization.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation claim handling, reserving practices, settlement negotiations, litigation management, and medical management strategies.
  • Experience working with TPAs, self-administered accounts, and large-loss claim oversight.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must be a motivated, self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Must be presently authorized to work in the U.S. without a requirement for work authorization sponsorship by our company for this position now or in the future.
  • Qualified candidates residing outside the St. Louis metropolitan area are eligible to work remotely or in one of our regional offices. For candidates who reside in the St. Louis metropolitan area, if hired you will be required to work a hybrid work schedule which includes a minimum of 3 days per week in our St. Louis Corporate Office, located at 1832 Schuetz Rd, Saint Louis, MO. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience adjusting Workers’ Compensation claims across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience managing aggregate excess workers’ compensation claims and coordinating claim activity across specific and aggregate exposures.
  • Experience partnering with underwriting teams regarding account analysis, statutory developments, and complex client matters.
