Remote Devops and Remote Cloud Engineer roles share many certifications and work environments, but Devops focuses on automation and deployment pipelines, while Cloud Engineers specialize in cloud infrastructure design and management. Both are in high demand across tech industries, often overlapping in skills and responsibilities.

What Are Remote DevOps Jobs?

Remote DevOps jobs focus on combining software development and information technology operations. In these careers, your duties include engineering software and systems to meet the specific needs of a business or enterprise. You may perform tasks such as software coding and the development of network resources to allow for easy updates and the addition of new technology. As a remote developer, you work from home or another remote location. DevOps job roles include DevOps architect, DevOps engineer, software and system tester, and an integration specialist, whose responsibilities involve working to integrate new software and applications seamlessly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote DevOps Engineer, you need strong skills in systems administration, cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or GCP), scripting, and CI/CD pipelines, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Familiarity with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, and infrastructure-as-code systems (e.g., Terraform or Ansible) is standard in this role. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills are crucial for collaborating effectively across distributed teams. These abilities enable seamless deployment, scalability, and reliability of systems, ensuring smooth operations in a remote work environment.

What is a Remote DevOps engineer?

A Remote DevOps engineer is a professional who works from a remote location to manage and automate an organization's IT infrastructure, development, and deployment processes. Their main goal is to bridge the gap between software development and IT operations, ensuring that software can be released quickly, reliably, and efficiently. Remote DevOps engineers use tools like CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and cloud platforms to streamline workflows and improve system reliability. They collaborate with development and operations teams using online communication and project management tools.

How to make $80,000 a year working from home?

A remote DevOps engineer can earn $80,000 or more annually by gaining relevant skills in cloud platforms, automation tools, and scripting, along with certifications like AWS or Azure. Building experience through projects and demonstrating proficiency in CI/CD, containerization, and infrastructure management can help achieve this salary level while working remotely.

Will AI replace DevOps?

AI is expected to augment DevOps roles by automating routine tasks such as deployment, monitoring, and incident response, allowing DevOps professionals to focus on more complex problem-solving and system design. While AI can improve efficiency and reduce errors, it is unlikely to fully replace the need for human expertise in managing and optimizing complex infrastructure and workflows.

Job description

GES was awarded the U.S. Air Force Cloud One Architecture and Common Shared Services contract and currently has an opening for a Cloud DevOps Engineer with a strong emphasis on automation supporting AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI environments. This is an exciting opportunity to leverage your expertise to build scalable, automated solutions that drive cost optimization, efficiency, and financial accountability across a global-scale multi-cloud environment supporting USAF mission systems.

This role focuses on developing and implementing automated solutions that enforce cost optimization, eliminate waste, and enable continuous, programmatic cost control across cloud platforms.

Location: These positions will be hybrid remote. Candidates may be required to work onsite as needed. Preferred candidates will be located near Hanscom AFB (Boston, MA), Gunter AFB (Montgomery, AL) or work in Reston, VA or Huntsville, AL.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

As a Cloud DevOps Engineer you will design, build, and maintain automated systems that continuously optimize cloud spend. You will partner closely with cost analysts, cloud engineers, and program leadership to translate cost-saving opportunities into scalable, repeatable engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

ยท Design and implement automated cost optimization solutions using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), scripting, and cloud-native tooling.

ยท Build automation to enforce compute rightsizing recommendations across AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI.

ยท Develop scripts and workflows to identify and automatically remediate underutilized or idle resources (e.g., unattached volumes, orphaned disks, idle compute).

ยท Create and manage automated snapshot and backup lifecycle policies to eliminate unnecessary retention and reduce storage costs.

ยท Implement automation to manage and optimize logging configurations, including dynamic log retention and filtering policies to reduce cost.

ยท Develop and maintain automation pipelines to track, recommend, and execute Reserved Instance (RI) and Savings Plan purchases and renewals.

ยท Integrate cost and usage data into automated workflows to continuously identify and act on savings opportunities.

ยท Build guardrails and policy enforcement mechanisms (e.g., via Terraform, Cloud Custodian, or native cloud policies) to prevent cost inefficiencies.

ยท Develop dashboards, alerts, and automated reporting for cost visibility, anomaly detection, and optimization tracking.

ยท Collaborate with engineering teams to embed cost optimization into CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.

ยท Create reusable modules and automation frameworks to standardize FinOps practices across the environment.

ยท Maintain documentation for automation solutions, processes, and runbooks.

ยท Contribute to the evolution of FinOps automation strategy, tooling, and governance.

Minimum Qualifications

ยท Bachelors and 8+ years of experience; Masters and 6+ years of experience. Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.

ยท Interim Secret clearance required to start; ability to obtain Secret clearance required to maintain employment.

ยท US citizenship required.

ยท Certifications: CompTIA Security+ or equivalent (IAT-2). If expired, renewal of certification will be required to begin work.

ยท Strong hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI).

ยท Demonstrated experience building automation using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) and scripting (Python, PowerShell, Bash).

ยท Experience with cloud cost management tools and APIs (AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, GCP Billing APIs).

ยท Strong understanding of cloud cost drivers and optimization techniques (compute, storage, networking, logging).

ยท Experience building scalable, repeatable solutions in cloud environments.

ยท Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a focus on automation and efficiency.

ยท Ability to work across cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
