What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Sharetec is looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our team!

At Sharetec, we believe in a people-first business. Our mission is to make millions of people's lives easier by developing innovative core banking and lending software solutions for credit unions and their members. Our customers rely on us for powerful financial technology that enhances operations across accounting, lending, member services, and online banking and they count on us to be a caring, trusted partner in their success.

We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our Platform Engineering organization. This role is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys ownership, automation, and improving how complex systems are deployed and operated.

This is a full-time, exempt, remote position open to candidates residing in any U.S. state, with the exception of California. The starting salary for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 + bonus opportunity.

Who Will Love This Job:

  • Someone who enjoys owning production deployments and taking responsibility for outcomes.
  • Someone energized by building automation that eliminates manual work and improves delivery consistency.
  • Someone with strong Windows and IIS experience who enjoys tuning and optimizing application hosting.
  • Someone excited to work on mobile application deployments (iOS & Android) at scale.
  • Someone interested in helping shape future platform direction, including containerized deployments.
  • Someone who values collaboration, clear communication, and practical problem-solving.

What You'll Do:

Mobile Deployment Ownership

  • Own end-to-end deployment, publishing, and configuration for iOS and Android mobile applications.
  • Manage App Store Connect and Google Play Console workflows, including signing, provisioning, and compliance.
  • Automate mobile build and release processes to improve consistency and reduce manual effort.
  • Coordinate closely with Engineering, Product, and Professional Services teams to ensure smooth releases.

Automation & Infrastructure-as-Code

  • Design, build, and maintain Ansible automation for deployments, APIs, IIS configuration, certificate rotation, and environment standardization.
  • Use Terraform to provision and manage infrastructure in a repeatable, auditable manner.
  • Reduce configuration drift by establishing infrastructure-as-code as the source of truth.
  • Create reusable automation patterns that support both mobile and backend systems.

Application Hosting & Platform Support

  • Operate and tune IIS in Windows-based production environments, including performance optimization and safe restarts.
  • Apply transferable web-server concepts from Apache or Nginx where applicable.
  • Support containerized workloads (Docker/Kubernetes) and help guide their adoption as part of the platform's future state.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements that support reliable, predictable deployments.

What You Bring:

  • 5-8 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or related roles supporting production systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Ansible for deployment and configuration automation.
  • Working experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Hands-on experience deploying mobile applications (iOS & Android).
  • Strong IIS experience in Windows-based production environments.
  • Experience supporting production SaaS platforms and troubleshooting across application and infrastructure layers.
  • Scripting skills in PowerShell, Bash, C#, or Python.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD pipelines.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Progress/OpenEdge or similar legacy platforms.
  • Exposure to container orchestration or platform modernization efforts.
  • Familiarity with authentication and identity flows (OAuth2, JWT, SSO).

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Relevant certifications are a plus, but not required.
