What is a remote developer?

Remote developers are software professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. They use digital tools to collaborate with team members and clients, writing code, fixing bugs, and participating in project meetings online. Remote developers enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours, but they also need strong communication skills and self-motivation. This role is popular in the tech industry, enabling companies to access talent from around the world.

What does a remote developer do?

Remote developers, or remote software developers, design and create computer software programs and applications for their employer or client. Unlike in-house developers, remote developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall function, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote developers may also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira), and cloud-based development environments is typically required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication set standout remote developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and maintaining productivity independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote developers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote developers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and managing work-life balance due to the lack of physical boundaries between home and work. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels with your team, set regular check-ins, and use collaboration tools effectively. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and setting defined work hours can help maintain productivity and personal well-being. Many companies also support remote developers through virtual team-building activities and flexible schedules.

Job description

Senior Platform Engineer (AWS / DevOps) - Remote

Aeroflow Health is a national leader in home medical equipment and clinical services. We combine technology, operational excellence, and compassionate expertise to deliver essential products and care directly to patients’ homes. At Aeroflow Health, we make healthcare accessible by taking a holistic approach to how we care for our patients.

We are equally passionate about taking care of our employees. Recognized as one of the fastest-growing healthcare companies in the U.S., an Inc. 5000 honoree, and a certified Great Place to Work®, Aeroflow continues to seek ways they can be one of the nation’s top employers. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to building an exceptional workplace where talented professionals are empowered, supported, and inspired to make a meaningful impact every day.

The Opportunity

Within Aeroflow, the Product Delivery Platform Engineering team enables engineering teams to build, deploy, and operate software quickly, securely, and reliably at scale. The team builds and supports the cloud infrastructure, tooling, automation, observability, and engineering workflows that power software delivery across the organization.

This team supports Ecommerce Product Engineering, Internal Product Engineering, and Innovation Engineering by improving developer experience, standardizing delivery workflows, increasing operational visibility, reducing friction across the software development lifecycle, and creating scalable engineering systems that help teams move faster without increasing operational risk.

This is not a traditional infrastructure support or ticket-based DevOps role.

The Product Delivery Platform Engineering team operates using modern Platform Engineering and DevOps principles focused on:

  • Developer enablement
  • Cloud infrastructure and automation
  • CI/CD reliability and delivery acceleration
  • Observability and operational excellence
  • Security and compliance enablement
  • Developer experience and engineering effectiveness

As a Senior Product Delivery Platform Engineer (DevOps / AWS), you will play a foundational role in improving how software is built, deployed, monitored, and operated across Aeroflow Health.

You will partner closely with software engineers to reduce operational friction, improve reliability, simplify workflows, and create systems that help teams move faster without sacrificing quality, security, or scalability.

Success in this role requires someone who enjoys building systems, simplifying complexity, solving hard problems, and acting as a trusted technical partner to engineering teams.

This role is intended to be a local, long-term engineering hire who can build strong partnership and context within Aeroflow’s engineering organization.

Your Primary Responsibilities:

We are currently seeking a Senior Product Delivery Platform Engineer (DevOps / AWS). This role is responsible for helping engineering teams build, deploy, operate, and scale software reliably and efficiently across the organization.

Typical responsibilities include:

Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Engineering

  • Design, implement, and maintain AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies.
  • Build reusable infrastructure patterns using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, or similar IaC tooling.
  • Build scalable cloud-native, serverless, and containerized platform capabilities leveraging Amazon ECS and other AWS-native services to improve engineering speed, reliability, and consistency.
  • Improve infrastructure maintainability, auditability, and operational maturity.

CI/CD & Delivery Enablement

  • Develop and optimize CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows using GitHub Actions or equivalent tooling
  • Improve deployment reliability, consistency, and engineering delivery velocity
  • Create repeatable engineering workflows that reduce friction across the software development lifecycle
  • Partner with engineers to simplify development and deployment workflows

Observability & Reliability

  • Improve operational visibility through monitoring, logging, tracing, instrumentation, and alerting
  • Help establish observability standards using Datadog or similar tooling
  • Participate in troubleshooting, incident response, root cause analysis, and long-term reliability improvements
  • Improve resiliency, production visibility, and system performance across engineering environments

Developer Experience & Engineering Enablement

  • Partner closely with software engineers to improve developer experience and remove unnecessary operational barriers
  • Create tooling, templates, automation, and reusable patterns that improve engineering productivity
  • Simplify onboarding, deployment, and operational workflows to improve engineering effectiveness
  • Act as a collaborative technical partner focused on enabling engineering teams to move faster and operate more effectively

Security, Governance & Compliance:

  • Implement secure-by-default cloud infrastructure and deployment patterns aligned with HIPAA, HITRUST, and internal standards
  • Contribute to IAM strategy, secrets management, access patterns, and least-privilege practices
  • Maintain strong auditability, change traceability, and operational accountability while balancing speed and quality

Additional Responsibilities

  • Employee has an individual responsibility for knowledge of and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies
  • Compliance is a condition of employment and is considered an element of job performance
  • Maintain HIPAA/patient confidentiality
  • Regular and reliable attendance as assigned by your schedule
  • Other job duties assigned

Skills for Success

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong systems thinking and the ability to solve problems across infrastructure, deployment, and application layers
  • A builder mindset with a passion for automation, simplification, and operational excellence
  • Strong AWS expertise and comfort operating production cloud environments, including modern compute, networking, serverless, and container services.
  • Ability to improve engineering workflows rather than create unnecessary friction or bureaucracy
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement durable solutions
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across engineering teams
  • High ownership, accountability, and follow-through
  • Ability to balance engineering speed with reliability, compliance, and operational quality
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and comfort operating in fast-moving environments
  • A highly collaborative mindset with a passion for enabling engineering teams to move faster, solve problems, and deliver better outcomes
  • A practical mindset with the ability to move quickly while maintaining strong engineering standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or related disciplines
  • Strong hands-on AWS experience in production environments
  • Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, SST, or similar technologies
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent tooling
  • Experience supporting cloud-native, serverless, and containerized architectures, including Amazon ECS or similar container orchestration platforms.
  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging, tracing, and observability solutions
  • Strong troubleshooting and systems analysis skills across infrastructure, networking, deployment, and application layers
  • Experience improving operational reliability through automation and standardization
  • Experience with one or more modern programming languages such as TypeScript, Python, Node.js, or Go
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with technical stakeholders
  • Must reside within reasonable commuting distance of Asheville, NC or be open to relocation

You Might Also Have

  • Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other regulated industries
  • Familiarity with HITRUST, SOC2, NIST, or similar compliance frameworks
  • Experience supporting Internal Developer Platforms or platform engineering initiatives
  • Experience with Amazon ECS, Datadog, Kubernetes, or Amazon EKS.
  • Experience implementing cloud cost visibility or optimization practices.
  • Experience supporting AI-assisted engineering tooling or workflows.
  • Experience operating in startup, scale-up, or high-growth engineering environments.

What we Look for:

We are looking for highly motivated, technically curious, and collaborative individuals who:

  • Think in systems rather than isolated tasks
  • Take ownership and follow through on commitments
  • Care deeply about improving developer experience and engineering effectiveness
  • Simplify complexity rather than create unnecessary process
  • Operate with humility, partnership, and strong problem-solving instincts
  • Thrive in fast-moving environments where priorities evolve and ambiguity exists
  • Bring a practical, solutions-oriented mindset with a bias toward action
  • Care about building scalable systems that improve outcomes for both engineers and the business

Candidates can expect:

  • High autonomy and ownership
  • Exposure to modern cloud-native engineering practices
  • Opportunities to influence engineering standards and platform direction
  • A collaborative engineering culture focused on continuous improvement
  • Meaningful partnership with engineering teams across the organization
  • Opportunities for growth, learning, and technical leadership
  • A  collaborative environment with meaningful cross-collaborative partnerships, particularly during onboarding and team integration

Success in this role comes from strong partnership, curiosity, adaptability, and an ability to build trust quickly with engineering teams. This individual should be equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to solve technical challenges and collaborating cross-functionally to improve how software is delivered across the organization.
