What is a remote designer?

Remote designers are creative professionals who work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or anywhere with an internet connection. They use digital tools to create visual content such as websites, graphics, user interfaces, and branding materials. Remote designers collaborate with clients and teams online, using communication platforms and project management tools. This flexible work setup allows them to work with clients globally and maintain a better work-life balance.

What does a remote designer do?

Remote designers develop ideas on ways to present their company's products and services. Instead of working in the office, remote designers work from home or another location outside the office with internet connectivity. Remote designers work in many different industries; they are found in fashion merchandising, advertising and marketing, computer programming and software development, and manufacturing. Specific job duties vary, depending on the type of industry and the project. But your responsibilities may include collaborating and brainstorming with other designers, engineers, developers, and business analysts to determine how to best display the target product or service and meet your client's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in design principles, and typically a degree in graphic or digital design. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, or other collaborative design platforms is usually required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation help you effectively collaborate with distributed teams and manage projects independently. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality work, meeting deadlines, and ensuring smooth remote collaboration.

What are some common challenges faced by remote designers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Designers often face challenges related to communication and collaboration, since they are not physically present with their team. Maintaining clear communication through regular video meetings and using collaborative design tools like Figma or Miro can help bridge this gap. Additionally, remote work requires strong self-discipline and time management skills to meet deadlines and balance multiple projects. Proactively seeking feedback and staying engaged with the team through chat platforms can also enhance workflow and project outcomes.

Raytheon DT’s Data, Analytics, and AI team is seeking a seasoned UX Designer – Data Visualization and AI to lead the design of next‑generation data and AI experiences across the organization. In this highly impactful role, you will shape the strategic direction of how users engage with Raytheon’s data and AI products—translating complex technical insights into clear, intuitive, and actionable experiences that drive confident decision‑making.

The ideal candidate excels at synthesizing visual clarity, storytelling, and conceptual design thinking to demystify AI: how it works, why it matters, and how its outputs should be interpreted and applied. Reporting to the Director of Product Management, the successful candidate will be a highly collaborative partner to engineering and product teams, deeply knowledgeable in modern AI and data technologies, and passionate about delivering value through user‑centered, insight‑driven design.

What You Will Do

  • Create high-quality artifacts that convey the critical conceptual aspects of data‑driven experiences, including visualization, storytelling, and the incorporation of AI insights to ensure a cohesive outcome.
  • Create high fidelity wireframes, prototypes, and user interfaces.
  • Design intuitive visual representations of AI outputs: such as predictions, recommendations, confidence levels, and model reasoning, to help users quickly understand and act on insights.
  • Collaborate effectively on a cross-functional software product team with designers, product managers, business analysts, front end, & back-end software engineers, QA, and project managers.
  •  Participate in primary (in-field) and secondary research activities with customers, employees, and other relevant business stakeholders to identify personas, create journey maps, service blueprints, application maps, task flow diagrams, etc.
  • Work in an agile software development environment.
  • Present design work and articulate the rationale behind visual, architectural, and interaction decisions, particularly those involving AI transparency and explainability.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers to help create user stories and related project documentation.
  •  Participate in design critique sessions; both providing and responding to feedback on designs.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience.
  • Demonstrated experience creating data visualization UX designs.
  • Demonstrated experience working within agile development environments and partnering closely with front‑end engineering teams to translate design concepts into high‑quality, production‑ready solutions.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Ability to create high-quality visual artifacts including diagrams, presentations, prototypes, wireframes, etc. that drive understanding among users, team members and project stakeholders.
  • Experience designing interfaces that communicate AI behavior, outputs, or probabilistic insights in ways that feel trustworthy and intuitive.
  • Ability to translate complex data and model information into clear visual narratives that support user decision‑making.
  • Experience with digital design tools, such as Sketch, Adobe XD, Figma, etc.
  • Self-motivated, self-driven and willing to take on new responsibilities.
  • Fluency with simple prototyping tools, such as Invision, Figma, and experience with more advanced prototyping tools that offer richer interaction and animation capabilities, such as Principle or Framer.
  • Experience using and working with component-based design systems such as Material UI.
  •  Propensity for self-directed problem-solving and the ability to work with limited guidance.
  • General familiarity with technology underpinnings of interfaces, including presentation layer code (JavaScript/CSS/HTML, React, Objective-C, etc.) and architecture for web and mobile experiences.
  • Ability to identify, articulate and leverage common design patterns and articulate why they should or shouldn’t be used.
  • Experience in creating user experience flows for Analytical and GenAI insights, recommendations, forecasting, and/or chatbots.
  • Extensive experience applying and leading user-centered design processes and connecting business and user needs to design decisions.
  • Experience designing, participating in and leveraging user research activities; ability to understand and gain fluency with complex problems and drive elegant solutions that address them.
  •  Deep systems thinking skills; fluency with conceptual considerations such as modularity, data and program hierarchy, inheritance and flow.
  •  Ability to lead and educate a novice user/customer population, translating expertise into understanding.
  • Effective at collaborating with cross-functional teams (IRL and remote) and working under tight deadlines.
