Job description

540 is seeking a Solutions Architect to support a mission-critical federal health data modernization initiative. The team is building a modern data platform that integrates information from diverse defense and federal systems through scalable pipelines, APIs, and reusable data products.

You'll work with senior architects, engineers, technical leads, and customer stakeholders to design solutions across Databricks, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, and on-premises environments. You'll help modernize legacy capabilities, apply reusable architectural patterns, and strengthen 540's presence through trusted relationships and strong technical delivery.

Location: Remote within the continental United States. Periodic travel may be required
Citizenship & Clearance Requirement: per client requirements, candidates must be U.S. Citizens with an active DoW Secret (or higher) clearance
Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (preferred)
540 Internal Thrive Level: Solutions Architect II or III

WHY 540?

540 is a forward-thinking company that the government turns to in order to #getshitdone. We don't just talk about innovation – we deliver it. We break down barriers, build impactful technology, and solve mission-critical problems.

HOW YOU'LL DRIVE IMPACT

  • Help design scalable solutions for a modern federal health data platform spanning cloud, on-premises, and government-hosted environments
  • Translate mission, business, data, security, and operational requirements into clear technical designs that account for data quality, governance, access, and lifecycle needs
  • Contribute to current-state and target-state architectures that guide the incremental modernization of legacy federal health systems and capabilities
  • Design and document approaches for integrating data across DoW and federal health systems using APIs, pipelines, shared services, and reusable data products
  • Apply established reference architectures, integration patterns, technical standards, and architectural guardrails across solutions
  • Evaluate technical options, dependencies, and risks related to security, scalability, performance, reliability, maintainability, cost, and delivery
  • Support the effective use of Databricks and cloud services across AWS, Azure, Oracle Cloud, and hybrid infrastructure
  • Participate in technical discovery and architecture discussions with engineers, technical leaders, customers, and mission stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain architecture diagrams, interface definitions, design documentation, decision records, and technical roadmaps
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers and Technical Leads to resolve technical challenges and keep implementations aligned with the broader platform architecture
  • Communicate technical decisions, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Represent 540 as a trusted technical partner by building strong relationships, sharing reusable practices, and recognizing where 540 can provide additional value

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • 3-10+ years of experience in solutions architecture, data architecture, software engineering, platform engineering, data engineering, or a related technical field
  • Experience contributing to enterprise data platforms, distributed systems, or complex technical solutions involving data ingestion, transformation, storage, APIs, or data products
  • Experience working in cloud or hybrid-cloud environments
  • Experience integrating data or applications across modern and legacy systems using APIs or other data exchange approaches
  • Working knowledge of data modeling, metadata, lineage, data quality, or data governance principles
  • Ability to account for security, availability, performance, scalability, reliability, and operational support needs in technical designs
  • Experience creating architecture diagrams, interface designs, technical documentation, decision records, or implementation roadmaps
  • Experience collaborating with engineers and technical leaders to implement complex solution designs
  • Familiarity with modern software engineering practices, development lifecycles, and Git-based workflows
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to discuss technical concepts with technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, investigate technical challenges, ask effective questions, and drive assigned work toward resolution

NICE TO HAVE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or similar modern data platforms
  • Experience with AWS and familiarity with Microsoft Azure or Oracle Cloud
  • Experience working across public cloud, on-premises infrastructure, and government data centers
  • Experience supporting platforms with very large or highly complex datasets
  • Experience with Palantir Foundry, Advana, or similar DoW data environments
  • Experience supporting healthcare, military health, DoW, or other regulated government environments, including familiarity with security, compliance, authorization, or data-handling requirements
  • Experience applying AI/ML components (RAG, agentic patterns) within a solution

BENEFITS & PERKS

  • Flexible PTO + all Federal holidays off
  • Health, dental and vision insurance plans
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • 401k with employer match
  • Company-sponsored life insurance, short- and long-term disability
  • Professional development (training, certifications, conferences)
  • Paid cloud developer accounts
  • Referral bonuses
  • HQ office perks (parking / metro reimbursement, nitro coffee & lunches)
  • Annual social events (540 Week, hackathon, charity golf tournament, etc.)
  • Access to 540's Washington Capitals & Nationals tickets
