What Does a Remote Database Developer Do?

A database developer or programmer creates and implements computer databases that store and maintain an entity’s data information. You work with clients to identify the best database management software and test the application or program for performance and efficiency. Your responsibilities include designing information systems to meet the needs of the client, testing product performance, performing data analysis, and developing documentation from your analysis. In some cases, you may also train or teach other developers or client teams. As a remote developer, you may complete your duties on your own or as part of a remote team for a corporate client or employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Database Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Database Developer, you need strong expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver solutions in a remote environment. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and reliable database solutions that meet organizational needs while supporting independent work and remote teamwork.

What is a Remote Database Developer?

A Remote Database Developer is a technology professional who designs, creates, and maintains database systems while working from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include developing database structures, optimizing queries, ensuring data integrity, and implementing security measures. They often collaborate with software developers and IT teams to ensure databases are efficient and meet organizational requirements. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks using cloud-based tools and secure connections, providing flexibility for both employers and employees.

What are some common challenges faced by remote database developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote database developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams, managing secure access to sensitive data, and troubleshooting issues without on-site support. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use secure VPNs and authentication protocols, and leverage collaborative tools like version control and ticketing systems. Regular check-ins and thorough documentation also help ensure everyone stays aligned and project progress remains smooth.

Role Summary

This role is heavily focused on developing and tuning stored procedures, improving query performance, implementing scalable data access patterns, and managing ETL processes in Azure Data Factory and Microsoft Fabric.
This is a hands-on, individual contributor role ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex data problems, writing efficient SQL, and owning database-related features end-to-end. You will work closely with application engineers and partner with senior database leadership on architecture and performance initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain stored procedures, functions, and queries for application features
  • Build, monitor, and troubleshoot ETL/ELT pipelines in Azure Data Factory and Microsoft Fabric
  • Optimize existing SQL code for performance, scalability, and maintainability
  • Analyze execution plans and resolve performance bottlenecks (indexing, query design, data access patterns)
  • Collaborate with application developers to implement efficient database interactions
  • Translate business requirements into well-structured database solutions
  • Support schema design, data modeling, and database changes for new features
  • Monitor and troubleshoot production issues related to database and pipeline performance
  • Assist with database administration tasks (performance monitoring, deployments, basic maintenance)
  • Contribute to database standards, code quality, and best practices
  • Own database-related workstreams from design through deployment and validation
Required Qualifications
  • 4-7 years of experience working with PostgreSQL, and/or Microsoft SQL Server
  • Strong SQL development skills, including writing and optimizing complex stored procedures
  • Experience managing ETL/ELT processes in Azure Data Factory and Microsoft Fabric
  • Solid understanding of query execution plans, indexing strategies, joins, aggregations, and set-based operations
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving performance issues in production environments
  • Familiarity with Azure or other cloud-based database platforms
  • Experience working closely with application teams on database-backed features
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
  • PostgreSQL development experience
  • Experience with Databricks (notebooks, jobs, or lakehouse patterns)
  • Experience with performance monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, Azure Monitor)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for database deployments
  • Exposure to high-availability and disaster recovery concepts
  • Experience working in structured, enterprise environments
  • Familiarity with tools such as SSMS, Azure Data Studio, DataGrip, or pgAdmin
What Success Looks Like
  • Stored procedures and queries are efficient, reliable, and scalable
  • ETL pipelines in ADF and Fabric run reliably and are maintained effectively
  • Application features backed by database logic perform well under load
  • Performance issues are identified and resolved proactively
  • Database changes are delivered cleanly and with minimal production risk
  • Engineering teams rely on you for strong SQL expertise and execution

Benefits:

  • Generous health, dental, & vision benefits package
  • Flexible paid time off
  • 11 paid company holidays
  • 401k + matching
  • Parental leave
  • Access to our award-winning RethinkCare platform supporting neurodiversity in the workplace through parental success, professional resilience, and personal wellbeing.
