What is a remote database administrator internship?

A Remote Database Administrator Internship is a temporary position where interns assist with managing, maintaining, and optimizing databases for organizations, all while working from a remote location. Interns typically learn about database installation, configuration, backup and recovery, security, and performance tuning under the guidance of experienced database administrators. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates seeking hands-on experience in database management systems such as MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server. Remote internships offer flexibility and the opportunity to work with teams from various locations, providing valuable experience in both technical and remote collaboration skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote database administrator intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Database Administrator Intern, you need a solid understanding of database concepts, SQL, and data modeling, typically supported by coursework or a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server, and basic knowledge of cloud platforms or remote collaboration tools, is often expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining data integrity, troubleshooting issues remotely, and contributing efficiently to distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote database administrator interns, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Remote database administrator interns often face challenges such as limited direct supervision, communication barriers with team members, and troubleshooting complex issues without onsite access. To overcome these, it's important to proactively communicate through regular check-ins, thoroughly document your work, and utilize collaboration tools for real-time problem-solving. Leveraging online resources, participating in team meetings, and seeking mentorship from senior DBAs can also help interns navigate technical and workflow challenges effectively.

BayNova is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Database Administrator to join our team in support of a mission-critical federal government client in a remote / work from home role.
This opportunity is for DBA technical lead in a hands-on, day-to-day operations and maintenance role. The position will support the organization's migration from SAP ASE to PostgreSQL, requiring strong expertise in PostgreSQL administration along with working knowledge of legacy SAP ASE / Sybase environments. Responsibilities include database monitoring, maintenance, replication, scripting, backup/recovery strategies, capacity planning, security, and performance tuning.
This role requires an excellent leader and team player who is central to daily project operations, maintenance, and oversight activities in a dynamic 24x7 customer-facing environment.
Responsiblities
  • Provide technical expertise in administering and maintaining production and non-production PostgreSQL environments running on Linux.
  • Lead efforts in database physical design, query optimization, indexing strategies, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Implement PostgreSQL replication, backup and recovery strategies, monitoring, and disaster-recovery capabilities.
  • Support schema conversions, data migrations, performance validation, and cutover activities as part of the ASE-to-Postgres migration.
  • Evaluate PostgreSQL configuration parameters; recommend improvements and best practices for stability and performance.
  • Maintain capacity planning, security controls, patching/upgrade strategy, and proactive database health assessments
  • Provide working expertise for the existing ASE environment during the migration lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot ASE performance issues, analyze error logs, validate configuration parameters, support replication server processes, and assist with patching/upgrade activities as needed.
  • Document ASE environment characteristics to support migration planning and knowledge transfer.
  • Participate in decommissioning and transitioning ASE instances following successful migration milestones.
  • Oversee daily ticket queue triage and assign work to other DBAs, providing mentorship and technical leadership to a small team.
  • Coordinate activities with customer project management and contract project managers.
  • Participate in complex customer/project meetings, needs assessments, technical design reviews, and solution feasibility discussions.
  • Provide database architectural guidance and evangelize modern concepts and best practices across the team.
Required Skills
  • Expertise in core database architecture: objects, file structures, tables, views, procedures, functions, triggers, sequences, indexes, constraints.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL administration, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, backup/recovery, replication, security, and monitoring.
  • Demonstrated experience with the SAP ASE technology stack (ASE, Replication Server, etc.), including performance tuning, patching, replication, and upgrade planning.
  • Experience with database architecture design concepts and the ability to clearly communicate these concepts to the team.
  • Experience leading or managing a small DBA team.
  • Strong SQL skills (SQL, PL/pgSQL, T-SQL) and proficiency with one or more shell scripting languages (Bash, Korn, etc.).
  • Ability to install and perform application/database upgrades.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret database performance data, both PostgreSQL and ASE.
  • Strong working knowledge of programming tools and data migration techniques used in schema conversion and ETL workflows.
  • Ability to work independently, manage your own schedule, and handle multiple priorities across multiple projects.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent performance tuning capabilities across queries, memory, process scheduling, I/O, and system resource utilization.
  • Understanding of database design and modeling concepts for varying workload types.
  • Experience working with vendors for troubleshooting, escalations, licensing, and procurement.
  • Strong understanding of Linux OS features and how they affect both PostgreSQL and ASE.
Education / Experience
  • 10+ years of database administration experience, including ASE and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL in enterprise environments (preferred).
  • 4-year degree in an IT-related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of scripting experience (preferred)
