Job description

Location: Remote / Telework (U.S. based) · Occasional on-site collaboration as requested Job Type: Full-time Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust background investigation Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship requiredAbout the RoleWe are hiring two Senior Data Scientists to support advanced fraud analytics for a federal Office of Inspector General (OIG). You will design and deploy machine learning models that detect fraud, improper payments, and non-compliance across government programs — work that directly supports real audits and criminal investigations.
This is high-impact, mission-driven work. You will partner closely with criminal investigators and data engineers to turn large, messy datasets into actionable case leads, predictive models, and clear visualizations for both technical teams and executive leadership. What You’ll Do
  • Design, develop, and deploy advanced statistical and machine learning models (supervised and unsupervised) to identify fraud, improper payments, and non-compliance
  • Perform data quality analysis on source tables to surface abnormalities and inconsistencies
  • Build and refine repeatable processes for combining and analyzing large relational, structured, and unstructured datasets
  • Develop and test predictive models using regression, Bayesian, clustering, and ensemble methods; tune models for best fit
  • Collaborate with criminal investigators to shape analytic strategy, adapt to shifting case needs, and handle protected information in line with federal rules (e.g., Rule 6(e))
  • Integrate and scale NLP methods — OCR, semantic similarity, and large language models — to parse and analyze large text corpora
  • Develop case leads for investigations based on model outcomes
  • Build dashboards and visualizations (network graphs, interactive maps, plots) that communicate methodology and results
  • Document all methodology, test models, and production models in compliance with evidentiary requirements
  • Deliver findings in multiple formats — investigative data summaries and executive briefings
  • Create automation using tools such as Python, SQL, SharePoint, Excel, and Power BI
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s, Ph.D., or doctorate-level equivalent degree in data science, machine learning, computer science, mathematics, or a related field; OR 10 years of applied work experience in those fields
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in each of:
    • Designing, implementing, and maintaining advanced AI systems and predictive models (supervised and unsupervised)
    • Developing analytic rules and models using leading-edge fraud analytics tools and best practices
    • Building regression, classification, and other statistical models to identify anomalies, patterns, and predictive variables
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in each of:
    • Providing data support for criminal investigations into fraud or abuse
    • Manipulating data in Python (Pandas required)
    • Working in a modern cloud environment (Azure, AWS, or GCP) — certifications preferred
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in each of:
    • Advanced data analysis in SQL (SQL Server and PostgreSQL)
    • Developing and scaling NLP solutions
    • Presenting methods and findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders, both orally and in written products/visualizations
Preferred
  • Cloud certifications (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Experience supporting government audits or investigations
Work Schedule & Environment
  • Core hours between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. local time, Monday–Friday
  • Telework authorized; occasional on-site meetings and collaboration as requested
  • Government-furnished equipment provided for work on government systems
  • Federal holidays observed
