Remote Data Science information

What is remote data science?

Remote data science refers to the practice of performing data analysis, modeling, and interpretation tasks from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or a co-working space. Remote data scientists use tools like Python, R, and SQL to analyze data, build predictive models, and communicate insights to stakeholders, all while collaborating virtually with their teams. This setup offers flexibility and can increase access to global job opportunities, but also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills to be effective.

What are the qualifications to get a remote data science job?

The qualifications for a remote data scientist depend in large part on your employer and their industry. Most employers expect remote data science professionals to have at least a bachelor’s degree in statistics, math, computer science, or a related field. Some expect postgraduate degrees in a field like data mining or machine learning or demonstrable skills in these areas. As a remote worker, you need access to relevant programs and an internet connection. You may also want to pursue certification, such as becoming a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a solid background in mathematics or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Expertise in programming languages such as Python or R, familiarity with machine learning libraries, and experience with cloud-based data platforms are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you effectively collaborate and deliver results in a remote environment. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, meaningful insights, and successful teamwork despite physical distance.

How do remote data scientists typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver insights?

Remote data scientists often work closely with product managers, engineers, and business analysts using digital collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Regular virtual meetings, code sharing via Git repositories, and clear documentation are essential to ensure alignment and transparency. While working remotely can present challenges in communication, proactive updates and scheduled syncs help foster strong teamwork and keep projects on track.

What is the difference between Remote Data Science vs Remote Data Analyst?

Remote Data Science involves developing predictive models and advanced analytics, requiring programming and machine learning skills. Remote Data Analysts focus on interpreting data, creating reports, and visualizations. While both roles analyze data remotely, Data Scientists typically handle more complex modeling tasks, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

Can I work remotely as a data scientist?

Yes, many data scientist roles are available as remote positions, especially in companies that prioritize flexible work arrangements. Remote data scientists typically need strong skills in programming, data analysis, and tools like Python or R, and may require familiarity with cloud platforms and collaboration tools. Availability depends on the employer's policies and the specific job requirements.

Job description

About The Team

At ParetoHealth, the Analytics team sits at the intersection of healthcare data, business strategy, and decision-making. We work with rich medical, pharmacy, stoploss, and business datasets to generate insights that directly influence product strategy, client outcomes, underwriting, and internal operations. The team partners closely with a varied set of stakeholders to move from questions to action, promoting data-driven decision making across the organization. We do this within a team culture of collaboration, shared responsibility, mutual respect, and growth.

Position Summary:

This role is designed for an experienced, analytically sophisticated individual contributor who feels most at home in the space between data science and traditional BI analytics.

As a Data Analyst, you will partner closely with Data Scientists and cross-functional stakeholders to tackle complex, ambiguous analytical problems, focusing on the operationalization and maintenance of solutions. You will contribute to analyses end-to-end, with a focus on long-term sustainability and enterprise-wide utilization of solutions.

This role is not focused on building predictive models or machine learning systems for production, and it does not include people management responsibilities. Success in this role comes from analytic rigor, a deep interest in efficiency and standardization, and the ability to turn complex data into decisions. You will report to the VP of Analytics.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support End-to-End Analyses
    • Partner with Lead Analysts/Data Scientists to understand business priorities and translate them into analytical approaches
    • Design, test, and refine appropriate methodologies for complex analytical questions with an eye toward long term sustainability
    • Work directly with large, messy healthcare datasets, including medical and pharmacy claims
    • Build and maintain robust SQL queries and analytical datasets
  • Deliver Decision-Ready Insights
    • Develop and support clear visualizations and summaries that communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Translate complex analyses into actionable recommendations in partnership with Analytics teammates
    • Document methodologies, assumptions, and limitations to ensure transparency and repeatability
  • Collaborate Within the Team
    • Work closely with Data Scientists and Lead Analysts to support exploratory analyses, hypothesis generation, and interpretation of results
    • Partner with Analytics teammates to align definitions, methodologies, and data quality standards
    • Contribute through collaboration and shared problem-solving
  • Drive Business Impact
    • Support stakeholder-identified opportunities where analytics can improve business outcomes
    • Support teams across the organization, including underwriting, product, account management, and cost containment
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • A problem-solver with a natural sense of curiosity, analytic rigor, and a deep interest in understanding complex healthcare data
  • A collaborator with proven ability to work cross-functionally across many different stakeholders to create and deliver insights
  • A strong communicator who effectively shares information at the appropriate level across a wide variety of audiences
  • A self-starter with a demonstrated track record of owning projects from idea to execution
  • A critical thinker with demonstrated ability to be creative, strategic, and to apply strong business judgement
  • A translator who can turn complex analysis into actionable insights and recommendations for the business

Core Qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years' experience in a healthcare-based analytics role, preferably in the health benefits space/insurance industry, with a solid understanding of the US based health insurance system.
  • Hands-on experience working with administrative healthcare data (medical and pharmacy claims)
  • Strong mathematical and statistical foundations, including familiarity with quantitative reasoning, distributions, rates, and variability as applied to real-world healthcare data
  • Strong SQL skills, including building, optimizing, and validating complex analytical queries
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Experience using Python for analysis and data wrangling
  • Experience in data cleaning, validation, and exploratory analysis using large, complex datasets
  • Understanding of analytical methods, including descriptive statistics, cohort analysis, risk assessment, trend analysis, and causal thinking
  • Strong analytic judgment: knowing which method to use, why, and when
  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative/analytic field, Master's preferred

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of Python (advanced modeling not required)
  • Experience working with data from CRM systems, e.g., Salesforce
  • Familiarity with underwriting and actuarial risk assessments for healthcare insurance coverage
  • Familiarity with AWS Serverless Services and data tools, such as S3, Lambda, Glue, Sagemaker and EMR

Perks & Benefits:

  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401k company contribution
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Professional development allowance
  • Transportation allowance and daily parking reimbursement
  • Engaging hybrid work environment
