Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, academiaTech firms, manufacturing, software companies
Industry UsageScientific research, academia, tech innovationProduct development, systems engineering, software solutions

Remote Data Science Physics focuses on applying physics principles to data analysis and modeling, often in research or scientific contexts. Remote Data Science Engineering emphasizes developing data-driven products and systems within engineering and technology sectors. While both roles require data science skills, their industry applications and focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Science Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Science Physicist, you need a strong background in physics, statistics, and mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as Physics or Data Science) and experience with data analysis. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning frameworks, and data visualization tools is essential, along with familiarity with cloud-based collaboration platforms. Excellent problem-solving skills, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and interdisciplinary collaboration. These skills ensure accurate data-driven insights, effective teamwork, and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

How do remote data science physicists typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams despite working offsite?

Remote data science physicists often work closely with software engineers, domain scientists, and project managers through virtual collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and cloud-based platforms for data sharing and analysis. Regular online meetings, shared documentation, and version-controlled repositories (like GitHub) are essential for maintaining clear communication and workflow alignment. While remote work offers flexibility, it requires proactive communication and strong organizational skills to ensure seamless integration with the broader research or product development team.

What is a Remote Data Science Physics job?

A Remote Data Science Physics job involves using data science tools, such as statistical analysis, machine learning, and programming, to solve problems or analyze data related to physics, all while working from a remote location. Professionals in this field may work on projects like simulations, data modeling, or research for academic or industry settings. They apply their understanding of physics concepts alongside data science skills to extract meaningful insights from large and complex datasets. This role often requires proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, knowledge of data analysis techniques, and a strong foundation in physics.

Job description

We are seeking a Quantum Research Scientist - Remote - to lead the remote development of quantum operations for next generation of QCCD trapped-ion quantum computers. The perfect candidate will have intimate knowledge of one or more advanced laboratory techniques for controlling systems of qubits, quantum spin systems, or cold and trapped atomic systems, including precision laser spectroscopy, low noise DC and RF electronics, cryogenic UHV systems, or computer control systems. They will use this expertise, along with excellent software, data analysis, and troubleshooting skills, to lead the development of new quantum operations for next generation of quantum computers and implement advanced remote automation routines to improve runtime and throughput of testbeds and commercial hardware. They will also have excellent communication and collaboration skills compatible with working remotely with an onsite team of technicians, engineers, and other scientists to develop new QCCD system architectures, designs and concept of operations.
Quantinuum believes that employees work better, more efficiently and more collaboratively in close proximity to other employees, where ideas can be exchanged readily, and decisions can be made more quickly for the benefit of the Company and our customers. All employees should work at their assigned location; however, this role may offer the opportunity to work remotely, with approvals.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct experimental work on a trapped ion QCCD testbed, develop validation and verification tests and collect data on system performance and hardware prototypes.
  • Invent and develop software and hardware automation tools to improve testbed and commercial system utilization and uptime
  • Perform design trade studies and analyses to inform architecture and design of future quantum computers
  • Own operation error models, review scientific results, identify areas for improvement, and implement enhanced processes and directions for further investigation.
  • Present scientific results internally, at conferences, and in publications.
  • Develop system designs, plans, and test procedures aligned with broader company strategy.
  • Extending the operational uptime of the testbed outside of core business hours
  • Quarterly travel to the site hosting the system

YOU MUST HAVE:
  • PhD must be completed prior to start date
  • 8+ years of experience (including Ph.D.) in one or more of the following areas: quantum computing, quantum information, atomic physics, laser and optics design, experimental control system development, or electronics design
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

WE VALUE:
  • 10+ years of experience in scientific research and development, engineering, or leadership roles preferred
  • Experience leading R&D teams in development and validation of systems of qubits
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Experience performing remote system operation
  • Experience with laser cooling and trapping of ions or neutral atoms
  • Experience performing simulation and modeling to inform design and experiments
  • Experience benchmarking systems of qubits and qubit operations
