Remote Data Science Physics focuses on applying physics principles to data analysis and modeling, often in research or scientific contexts. Remote Data Science Engineering emphasizes developing data-driven products and systems within engineering and technology sectors. While both roles require data science skills, their industry applications and focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Science Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Science Physicist, you need a strong background in physics, statistics, and mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as Physics or Data Science) and experience with data analysis. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning frameworks, and data visualization tools is essential, along with familiarity with cloud-based collaboration platforms. Excellent problem-solving skills, communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and interdisciplinary collaboration. These skills ensure accurate data-driven insights, effective teamwork, and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

How do remote data science physicists typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams despite working offsite?

Remote data science physicists often work closely with software engineers, domain scientists, and project managers through virtual collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and cloud-based platforms for data sharing and analysis. Regular online meetings, shared documentation, and version-controlled repositories (like GitHub) are essential for maintaining clear communication and workflow alignment. While remote work offers flexibility, it requires proactive communication and strong organizational skills to ensure seamless integration with the broader research or product development team.

What is a Remote Data Science Physics job?

A Remote Data Science Physics job involves using data science tools, such as statistical analysis, machine learning, and programming, to solve problems or analyze data related to physics, all while working from a remote location. Professionals in this field may work on projects like simulations, data modeling, or research for academic or industry settings. They apply their understanding of physics concepts alongside data science skills to extract meaningful insights from large and complex datasets. This role often requires proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, knowledge of data analysis techniques, and a strong foundation in physics.

This role is responsible for building and operating scalable, reliable, and secure data platforms that power analytics, machine learning, and data-driven decision-making across the organization.
You will partner closely with data engineering, analytics, product, and business teams to ensure our data ecosystem enables speed, trust, and innovation.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities
Platform Strategy & Vision

  • Define and execute the long-term vision for the company's data platform, aligned with business goals.
  • Establish standards, principles, and roadmaps for data infrastructure, tooling, and architecture.
  • Drive adoption of modern data platform practices (e.g., cloud-native, lakehouse, data mesh where appropriate).

Architecture & Engineering Leadership

  • Oversee the design and evolution of scalable data pipelines, storage systems, and compute platforms.
  • Ensure high availability, performance, cost efficiency, and security of data systems.
  • Lead decisions on tooling and frameworks (e.g., orchestration, ingestion, transformation, observability).

Data Reliability & Governance

  • Establish robust data quality, lineage, and observability practices.
  • Partner with governance, security, and compliance teams to ensure proper data controls.
  • Promote "data as a product" thinking with clear ownership and SLAs.

Data Egress & Consumption Enablement

  • Design and operate a scalable data egress layer that enables governed, performant access to data for downstream consumption tools such as Looker, Tableau, and other BI/analytics platforms.
  • Define standardized patterns for data access (e.g., semantic layers, curated data marts, APIs, query engines) to ensure consistency and usability across business units.
  • Ensure high-performance query capabilities and workload management to support enterprise-scale BI usage.
  • Partner with analytics and business teams to optimize data models and delivery mechanisms for self-service analytics.
  • Enforce governance, security, and access controls at the point of consumption, ensuring compliance with enterprise data policies.
  • Drive adoption of certified datasets and semantic definitions to reduce duplication and improve trust in reporting.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of data platform and infrastructure engineers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Define roles, career paths, and hiring strategies for platform teams.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with analytics, data science, and product teams to understand requirements and remove friction.
  • Work with DevOps and cloud teams to align infrastructure strategy.
  • Act as a key advisor to senior leadership on data platform capabilities and trade-offs.

Operational Excellence

  • Implement best practices for CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and platform automation.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Define and track KPIs for platform health and adoption.

Qualifications
Experience

  • 10+ years in data engineering, platform engineering, or related fields.
  • 5+ years in leadership roles managing engineering teams.
  • Proven experience building and scaling modern data platforms in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of data architectures (data lakes, warehouses, lakehouse patterns).
  • Experience with distributed processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink).
  • Strong understanding of data orchestration (e.g., Airflow, Dagster), storage, and streaming systems.
  • Familiarity with data observability, quality, and governance tools.

Leadership & Influence

  • Strong ability to set vision and drive execution across multiple teams.
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders and aligning cross-functional priorities.
  • Track record of building teams and developing engineering talent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing data mesh or domain-oriented data ownership models.
  • Background in supporting ML platforms or real-time data use cases.
  • Experience in high-growth or large-scale enterprise environments.

Success Measures
