Job description

Company Description
Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy Inc. employee, whether a team member of Etsy or Depop, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.
Salary Range:
$239,000.00 - $311,000.00
What's the role?
In this role, you will partner closely with engineering managers, product managers, and technical leads across the Data Platform initiative to set technical direction and ensure these foundational systems are reliable, scalable, and easy to use. A key part of this role is acting as a genuine thought partner to your PM counterpart - deeply understanding the problems our internal customers face and shaping the product roadmap to solve them well.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.
What's this team like at Etsy?
Etsy's Data Platform team builds the infrastructure that powers data-driven decision-making across the organization. As a Senior Engineering Manager for Data Collections and Streaming Data Platform, you will lead two teams at the heart of how Etsy captures, moves, and delivers data at scale.
Data Collections owns the event registration and collection framework that enables engineering teams across Etsy to define, instrument, and collect data - from user interactions and web events to database change logs. The team builds and maintains the tooling engineers use to manage, monitor, and debug event streams, as well as the change data capture (CDC) pipeline that continuously syncs production database state into BigQuery, keeping analytical datasets current and accurate.
Streaming Data Platform owns Etsy's Kafka infrastructure and the developer tooling that makes it easy for other teams to build and operate streaming applications. This includes a framework for standing up pipelines that move data from event streams to downstream destinations in real time, as well as a suite of connectors that continuously route data between systems for low-latency delivery across the organization.
What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Lead two engineering teams - Data Collections and Streaming Data Platform - establishing effective processes that drive collaboration across disciplines and ensure timely delivery.
  • Partner closely with the broader Data Platform leadership team and stakeholders across engineering to understand needs and translate them into a clear technical roadmap.
  • Act as a product-minded partner to your PM counterpart: spend time understanding the workflows and pain points of the internal engineering teams you serve, and use that context to help shape what gets built and why - not just how.
  • Set clear team goals, prioritize projects, and ensure reliable delivery. Monitor system health and work proactively to identify and resolve issues before they impact downstream consumers.
  • Build and maintain a culture of engineering excellence, including strong observability practices, incident response, and documentation standards.
  • Take part in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring and onboarding exceptional engineering talent.
  • Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the engineers on your team, creating clear paths for growth at all levels of seniority.
  • Work with other leaders across engineering to develop and evolve engineering processes and standard methodologies.
  • Represent your teams' work and technical strategy to senior leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role:
  • Experience leading platform or infrastructure engineering teams, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, event streaming, or data pipelines at scale.
  • Proven ability to set technical direction across multiple teams, balancing long-term architectural investments with short-term delivery needs.
  • Deep comfort with the tradeoffs involved in building high-reliability, low-latency data infrastructure, and the ability to communicate those tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical partners.
  • A product-minded orientation: genuine curiosity about the internal customers your teams serve, the problems they need to solve, and how your tooling can best address those needs. You see yourself as a partner in shaping what gets built, not just delivering it.
  • Skilled in coaching and mentoring engineers at all levels, shaping team processes for effective delivery, and building an inclusive and high-performing team culture.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience working effectively with partner teams including data engineering, product engineering, and analytics.
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering people management, ideally including experience managing multiple teams or a team of significant size and scope.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions, promote high-quality technical decision-making, and excel in an experimentation and metrics-driven environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, comfortable working with diverse collaborators at all levels of the organization.
