Overview:
Sentara Health is seeking to hire a qualified individual to join our team as a Trauma Registrar.
Position Status: Full-time (40 hours a week), dayshift
Position Location: This position is remote only in Hampton Roads, VA. Training will be on-site at Sentara Norfolk General for the first 6 weeks.
Standard Working Hours: 8:00AM - 5:00PM during training. Flexibility with working hours after successful completion of training.
Overview
The Trauma Registrar is responsible for collecting, abstracting, coding, validating, and maintaining trauma-related data for all eligible patients. This position ensures accurate and timely submission of data to the hospital trauma registry, the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), and state or regional registries. The Trauma Registrar supports the trauma program's performance improvement and patient safety initiatives, accreditation efforts, and trauma-related research.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Identify trauma patients who meet the inclusion criteria.
  • Abstract clinical and demographic data from electronic medical records, EMS records, and provider documentation.
  • Code injuries using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and assign ICD-10 and CPT codes as appropriate.
  • Enter abstracted information into trauma registry software accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Validate data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with ACS, NTDB, and state trauma registry standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient health information in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Provide trauma case data for quality improvement, research, and performance improvement reviews.
  • Prepare reports and statistical summaries for internal committees and external agencies.
  • Support trauma center verification/accreditation processes.
  • Participate in trauma multidisciplinary performance improvement meetings as needed.
  • Work with physicians, nurses, EMS providers, and quality staff to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Assist with trauma-related research projects and provide data for publication or benchmarking.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trauma registry practices, coding guidelines, and data quality standards.
  • Attend continuing education workshops, webinars, or professional conferences as assigned - 8 hours/ year required.

Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates' and/or Bachelor's degree in HIM or healthcare-related field, or nursing licensure preferred

Certification/Licensure
  • Completion of the ATS Trauma Registry Course is required within 12 months of hire
  • Completion of the AAAM AIS Coding Course is required within 12 months of hire
  • Completion of an ICD-10 trauma course is required within 12 months of hire, and a refresher course every 5 years
  • CAISS certification preferred, required within 24 months of hire
  • CSTR certification preferred

Experience
  • Administrative experience - 3 years required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology required
  • Two (2) years of experience in health information management, computer data management/data processing, or medical records preferred
  • Prior trauma registry experience strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and AIS coding preferred
