Installation Tech – Hyperscale Data Center Job Description

Job Title: Installation Tech – Hyperscale Data Center

Compensation: $22 Per Hour and $40 Daily Food Allowance (Per Diem) W2

100% Travel Requirement

Role Overview
A Data Center Installation Technician is responsible for the physical setup, configuration, and deployment of data center infrastructure, ensuring systems are installed correctly, operate efficiently, and meet service level agreements. This role is critical in maintaining uptime, security, and performance of mission-critical IT environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware Installation & Configuration: Install and configure enterprise servers, storage systems, networking equipment (switches, routers), and cabling infrastructure.
  • Rack & Equipment Deployment: Position racks, connect power and network cabling, and power up systems for provisioning teams.
  • Structured Cabling: Install, label, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cables; perform fiber cleaning and testing.
  • Power & Cooling Systems: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot power supplies, UPS systems, and cooling infrastructure.
  • Network & Connectivity: Troubleshoot and replace network switches; ensure fiber/copper connectivity meets standards.
  • Maintenance & Upgrades: Perform routine maintenance, system upgrades, and patching to keep infrastructure running smoothly.
  • Documentation: Record all installations, modifications, and procedures; update asset inventories and SOPs.
  • Security & Compliance: Maintain data center cleanliness, enforce security policies, and control access for visitors and vendors.
  • Incident Support: Serve as a first-line escalation point for serious incidents, assisting engineers in gathering and resolving issues.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of servers, storage, and networking hardware; familiarity with RAID, SAN, Linux/Unix, GRUB.
  • Cabling Expertise: Experience with structured cabling standards (copper/fiber) and testing tools.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware, network, and infrastructure issues.
  • Project Execution: Experience in data center builds, upgrades, or migrations; ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.
  • Compliance & Safety: Knowledge of OSHA, NEC, and data center cleanliness/security standards.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
  • Travel: 100% travel job. The company will arrange for travel to home base location every 4 months. If tech decides to visit home sooner he/ she may do at its own expense. In case of termination the company will arrange for travel back to base location.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years in IT/data center operations or hardware deployment.
  • Experience with GPU or high-performance computing infrastructure (preferred).
  • Certifications such as BICSI, ITIL, or HP Accredited Platform Specialist (preferred).

Work Environment

  • Location: Onsite in data center facilities, often in mission-critical or hyperscale environments
  • Schedule: May include day, night, or weekend shifts; on-call availability for critical events.
  • Tools: Fiber testers, patch panels, rack movers, power distribution units, and network cabling kits.
