Remote Data Center Design information

How does a Remote Data Center Design professional typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Remote Data Center Design professional regularly works with cross-functional teams including network engineers, architects, project managers, and HVAC specialists. Collaboration often happens through virtual meetings, cloud-based design platforms, and shared documentation to ensure all infrastructure requirements are met efficiently. Clear communication is crucial, as you’ll coordinate on timelines, technical standards, and troubleshooting, often across different time zones. Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders ensures that design solutions align with operational needs and industry regulations.

What is remote data center design?

Remote data center design involves planning, engineering, and managing data center infrastructure from a location separate from the physical site. Professionals in this field use digital tools and communication technologies to create layouts, specify equipment, and ensure systems meet performance, security, and efficiency standards. This approach enables collaboration across global teams and supports efficient project delivery, especially for organizations with multiple or geographically distant data centers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Remote Data Center Design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Data Center Design, you need a solid background in electrical and mechanical engineering, data center infrastructure standards, and experience with site planning and design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and industry standards like ASHRAE or Uptime Institute Tier classifications is typically required. Strong project management, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating remote teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure data centers are efficiently designed, compliant, and resilient, supporting critical business operations.

What is the difference between Remote Data Center Design vs Data Center Technician?

Job Summary

We are seeking a Project Engineer to support Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects integrated with data center builds and utility power supply infrastructure. This role focuses on electrical systems, multi-discipline coordination, and execution support across the full project lifecycle - from early design and planning through construction, commissioning, and turnover. They will assist with projects that enable reliable, resilient power for mission-critical data center environments, working closely with engineering, construction, EPC partners, utilities, and internal stakeholders. This role blends office-based engineering and coordination work with site engagement to support execution, resolve issues, and maintain alignment between design intent and construction reality. The ideal candidate brings a solid technical foundation, comfort operating in construction and field environments, and the professional presence to support meetings, coordinate stakeholders, and help drive complex infrastructure projects forward.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Support BESS projects tied to data center builds and utility interconnections, from early design review through construction and commissioning

Review, interpret, and coordinate electrical drawings, studies, and technical documentation (single lines, schematics, grounding, protection, interconnection studies, etc.)

Assist with coordination between electrical, civil, mechanical, utility, and data center construction teams to ensure alignment across scopes

Support integration of BESS systems with data center power infrastructure, including substations, medium- and low-voltage systems, and utility feeds

Participate in project planning, scheduling, and execution discussions, helping identify risks, constraints, and constructability considerations

Attend and contribute to project meetings, including multi-stakeholder and EPC coordination forums

Communicate effectively with internal engineering teams, contractors, superintendents, vendors, utilities, and external partners

Help track action items, RFIs, submittals, changes, and deliverables to keep projects moving on schedule

Support office-based engineering and coordination work while remaining comfortable with periodic site visits to assist with construction execution and issue resolution

Travel to project and construction sites as needed to support project delivery and resolve real-time challenges

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

5+ years of relevant project or field experience, ideally supporting one or more of the following:

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Data center construction or power infrastructure

Utility-scale power generation, transmission, or interconnection projects

Large, complex infrastructure or energy projects

Foundational understanding of electrical systems, with the ability to review and discuss electrical drawings, studies, and equipment

Experience with construction environments (field roles, site support, or hybrid project engineering positions)

Strong coordination and communication skills, with the ability to work across engineering, construction, and operations teams

Professional presence and comfort participating in or supporting large, cross-functional project meetings

Ability to balance office-based engineering work with hands-on field engagement

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Engineering (PE) certification.

Experience with design tools such as PSCAD or ETAP.

Familiarity with IEC standards (e.g., 61215, 61646, 61730).
