What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Dance Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Dance Researcher, you need a strong background in dance theory, history, and research methodologies, often supported by a degree in dance, performing arts, or a related field. Familiarity with research databases, online collaboration tools, and data analysis software is typically required. Excellent written communication, critical thinking, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for presenting findings and working independently. These skills ensure accurate, relevant research contributions and effective collaboration in a remote environment.

What are some common challenges faced in a remote dance research role and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote dance research is limited access to in-person performances and direct movement observation, which can make analysis and data collection more complex. To overcome this, researchers often rely on digital archives, virtual interviews, and video recordings to gather information. Another challenge is staying connected with the dance community and collaborators, which can be addressed by participating in online forums, attending virtual conferences, and scheduling regular video meetings with peers. Maintaining strong digital organization and communication skills is key to success in this remote environment.

What is remote dance research?

Remote dance research involves the study and analysis of dance practices, history, choreography, and performance using digital tools and online resources rather than in-person observation or participation. Researchers may conduct interviews, analyze video recordings, access digital archives, and collaborate with dancers or scholars virtually. This approach allows for greater flexibility and access to a wider range of material, making it possible to study dance forms and communities from around the world without geographical limitations.

Job description

Overview

The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) is seeking a development professional to support the School of Education (SoE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Director of Development is primarily responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift prospects for the SoE.  This position is in Madison, Wisconsin. Although this position allows for some remote work, the Director of Development must have easy access to the Madison, Wisconsin campus as well as an ability to travel significantly (25%).

WFAA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing support for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The School of Education (SoE) and many of its programs are widely regarded as being among the very best in the nation. In addition to our high-quality academic programs, the people who make up the School are addressing some of society’s most critical needs and furthering their fields—our renowned faculty, staff, and students conduct innovative research and scholarship that is driven by the Wisconsin Idea and the conviction that the work they do should benefit Wisconsin, the country, and the world. We offer a broad and diverse array of undergraduate and graduate programs — from elementary and secondary education, educational policy and leadership, and special education and counseling; to studio art, modern dance, and theatre; to exercise science and occupational therapy.

Who is WFAA?

The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association is a private, nonprofit corporation that encourages individuals and organizations to make gifts to the university and to connect with the UW. We believe that private support grows out of good relationships between campus leaders, faculty and program staff who need support, and the alumni and friends who want to invest in UW–Madison. We provide important engagement opportunities to link those interested in supporting the UW to areas about which they are passionate, building a strong community of Badgers.

Diversity and Inclusion:

Just as the university community benefits from differing viewpoints, perspectives, and experiences, inclusion and diversity are imperative for the success of our mission. WFAA values people and the differences that they bring to the organization and creates an environment in which all staff members and constituents feel respected and have opportunities to thrive.
