Remote Customs Compliance information

What is a remote customs compliance?

A Remote Customs Compliance job involves ensuring that a company's international shipments adhere to all relevant customs laws and regulations, while working from a remote location. Professionals in this field review documentation, classify goods, manage import/export compliance, and communicate with customs authorities to prevent delays and fines. This role may also include developing compliance policies, staying updated on regulatory changes, and providing guidance to other departments regarding customs requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote customs compliance specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Customs Compliance Specialist, you need a strong understanding of international trade regulations, customs laws, and documentation requirements, often supported by relevant certifications or degrees in international business or logistics. Familiarity with customs management software, global trade management systems, and platforms like SAP GTS or Descartes is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting regulations and collaborating with global partners. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate compliance, minimize legal risks, and facilitate efficient cross-border operations for organizations.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in remote customs compliance roles, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Remote customs compliance professionals often navigate challenges such as staying up-to-date with constantly changing international trade regulations and ensuring seamless communication with global teams and authorities. Working remotely, they may contend with time zone differences and limited face-to-face collaboration, making it crucial to leverage digital tools for document management and virtual meetings. Building strong organizational skills, proactively seeking regulatory updates, and maintaining clear communication channels with logistics partners and internal stakeholders can help address these challenges and ensure compliance remains robust.

Job description

The Trade Compliance Analyst - Export Classification supports international shipping and trade compliance operations by reviewing and validating U.S. export-control classifications for products.

This role focuses on applying export classification regulations through use of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and Commerce Control List (CCL) to determine whether products are classified under an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN), including EAR99. The analyst will research product information, apply established classification guidance, document conclusions, and escalate items that require additional review.

This is an opportunity for someone with experience in U.S. export controls who wants to build specialized expertise in product classification within a global trade, logistics, or supply chain environment.

Responsibilities
  • Review and validate export-control classifications for products.
  • Research the EAR and CCL to determine appropriate ECCN classifications and EAR99 treatment.
  • Evaluate product descriptions, technical specifications, manufacturer information, images, and related documentation to support classification decisions.
  • Identify items that may fall within a controlled ECCN and distinguish them from items classified as EAR99.
  • Document classification decisions, supporting rationale, and relevant research in accordance with established procedures.
  • Escalate complex, ambiguous, or technically sensitive classifications when additional expertise is required.
  • Support regular auditing activities and ensure alignment with internal policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Compliance, Operations, and cross-functional teams to resolve classification questions and support export-control compliance.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Foundational knowledge of U.S. export controls, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and/or International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • Working knowledge of the Commerce Control List (CCL) and ECCN framework.
  • Understanding of EAR99 classifications and export-control requirements.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to make well-supported decisions based on available information.
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage recurring workloads while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of experience in trade compliance, export controls, product classification, customs compliance, logistics, supply chain, international trade, or a related field.
  • Direct experience with ECCN classification, CCL research, or EAR99 determinations.
  • Familiarity with technical product specifications and manufacturer documentation.
  • Understanding of HS/HTS classification and the distinction between tariff classification and export-control classification.
  • Experience in logistics, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, supply chain operations, international trade, or related environments.
What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means making accurate, timely, and well-supported export classification decisions; consistently applying the EAR and CCL; maintaining clear documentation; recognizing when escalation is needed; and contributing to a strong, scalable export-compliance program.
