Job description

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose: economic empowerment. We build technology that increases access and independence for sellers, individuals, and artists around the world. Working at Block means working on and across our brands-Square, Cash App, Afterpay, TIDAL, Spiral, and Proto- in roles that connect, enable, and push all of them forward faster.

We're remote-first by design and operate with intelligence at the center of everything we do. At Block, you'll be challenged by some of the brightest, most creative minds in the industry and have the tools and autonomy to do the most meaningful work of your career.

The Role

As Director, Federal Affairs you will be a part of a team that develops and executes a strategy for engagement with federal policymakers. You will deepen relationships, track key legislative and regulatory issues, and will work cross- functionally to ensure Block's vision of economic empowerment and access to financial systems is well represented at all levels of the federal government.

You will be a part of the broader US Policy Team, and will report to the Head of US Public Policy and Government Affairs. In this role you will support and collaborate with colleagues across the policy team. This role is based in Washington DC.

You Will

  • Be a part of a team that is responsible for developing and executing strategies to engage proactively and reactively with federally elected officials, Congressional staff, third party groups, regulatory agencies, and the Administration on issues affecting Block.
  • Be a registered lobbyist for Block, with the expectation that a significant time will be spent engaging with policymakers on Capitol Hill or in the Administration.
  • Find creative, proactive ways to engage with elected stakeholders to deliver key messaging on issues of importance.
  • Maintain fluency on a wide variety of regulatory and policy issues including financial regulation, consumer protection, trade, tax, digital assets, AI/machine learning, and privacy.
  • Track key legislative and regulatory activity, and develop strategies to achieve positive policy outcomes.
  • Drive processes to develop thoughtful, inclusive, and cohesive responses to incoming policy hurdles.

You Have

  • 8+ years of experience in federal government relations, with a preference for experience in the financial services and technology sectors on Capitol Hill or within an Executive Agency
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; and an ability to effectively explain complicated issues and policy positions to any audience
  • Experience navigating complex policy issues
  • Ability to be adaptable to changing timelines and able to prioritize effectively
  • Avid user of AI and eagerness to learn more about technology and innovation
  • Experience working collaboratively across internal functions
  • Entrepreneurial style and comfort working in fast-paced environments
  • Impeccable ethics and high integrity

We believe in being fair, and are committed to an inclusive interview experience, including providing reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants throughout the recruitment process. We encourage applicants to share any needed accommodations with their recruiter, who will treat these requests as confidentially as possible.
