Job description

Job Description
We are currently seeking a Senior Microgrid Design Engineer (remote position) to support HESG project development throughout our North America region. In this capacity you will engage primarily in Commercial & Industrial (C&I) projects to provide sales support and engineering support to the team. In addition, you will: use your extensive subject matter expertise to influence customers toward Honeywell solutions; provide both external and internal consultations; help Honeywell teams develop and maintain the right product messaging, customer support, and training; foster cross-functional alignment to customer needs; and participate in pursuit strategy planning, and customer negotiations.
Our team strives to provide our customers with innovative energy solutions tailored to each client. Half of the entire Honeywell portfolio is linked directly to energy efficiency, and we have completed over 5,000 efficiency projects that are expected to deliver more than $5 billion in utility and operational savings around the globe. The Honeywell Energy Services Group (HESG) does not just focus on a singular set of solutions, but rather, takes a comprehensive view of the entire facility to identify potential opportunities, discover issues, and identify recommended improvements. We help our customers create an energy strategy that addresses financial obligations and provides scalability for the future.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop detailed energy cost savings, tariff optimization, and resiliency valuation models for distributed energy resource (DER) solutions, including solar, BESS, and CHP systems.
  • Lead and coordinate the engineering design process across all project phases, from feasibility and conceptual design through permitting and construction documentation, including due diligence, design optimization, and review of shop drawings from the Engineer of Record and service providers.
  • Design end-to-end microgrid architectures and produce comprehensive Scopes of Work (SOWs), incorporating protection schemes, controls, and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Utilize industry-standard modeling platforms (e.g., HOMER, Xendee) to perform techno-economic optimization of microgrid systems and DER portfolios.
  • Engineer and implement advanced strategies for peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, and supply/demand orchestration to optimize operational performance and reduce demand charges.
  • Evaluate and optimize DER asset portfolios based on site-specific constraints, including load profiles, space limitations, interconnection capacity, and financial return thresholds.
  • Conduct site visits and participate in customer meetings to support project development and ensure alignment with technical and operational requirements.
  • Collaborate directly with customers to define resiliency objectives, including critical load identification, outage scenarios, and backup duration requirements.
  • Plan and execute engineering activities for RFPs, including technical package preparation, bid evaluation, and support for contract negotiations.
  • Analyze energy market trends, regulatory frameworks, and incentive structures (e.g., IRA tax credits, state programs) to inform project economics and investment strategy.
  • Deliver technical presentations and client-facing briefings on grid-edge technologies, clearly articulating system design, economics, and operational value. Ensure completeness and accuracy of technical documentation for external stakeholders.
  • Support commercial teams by translating technical solutions into clear value propositions aligned with energy security, cost reduction, and ESG objectives.
  • Review and validate technical proposals and engineering designs, ensuring accuracy in electrical configurations, control systems, and integration with existing infrastructure.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on microgrid fundamentals, DER integration, and utility interconnection processes for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate cross-functional engineering support for high-priority project pursuits, including feasibility studies, bid development, and client deliverables.
  • Mentor junior engineers in power systems analysis, energy modeling, and DER optimization methodologies.

Areas of job responsibility and associated skills:
Perform Microgrid Feasibility Audits and DER Solution Development - Ability to develop investment-grade audits focused on onsite generation and load profiles. Provide unique, customer-focused microgrid solutions that meet resiliency, carbon reduction, and financial requirements. Navigate legacy drawings, brownfield equipment, and incomplete information to provide the best plan, estimate, and design to achieve client objectives. Perform complex financial modeling (including LCOE and ROI) to demonstrate the viability of the microgrid. Actively manage scope, schedule, and cost during the preliminary design phase.
Technical Knowledge and Aptitude in Power Systems - Must have a deep understanding in the development of projects involving Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar PV, Microgrid Controllers, and Combined Heat and Power (CHP). Knowledgeable in grid-interconnection standards (IEEE 1547) and "island mode" transition logic. Ability to develop unique hybridized offerings (e.g., pairing EV charging with BESS) to meet specific site needs. Proficiency in generating detailed Scopes of Work (SOW) for EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) partners.
Technical Sales Communication and Stakeholder Engagement - Ability to effectively communicate the value of energy independence and resiliency at all organizational levels. Ability to translate complex system architecture and operating modes into clear business outcomes for non-technical stakeholders. High proficiency in modeling software (HOMER, XENDEE, ETB, etc). and building DCF models.
Project Development Process Adherence - Ability to collaborate with a diverse team of power engineers and software developers. Complete contract documents in accordance with industry standards and internal best practices. Coordinate with Measurement and Verification (M&V) teams to validate post-commissioning performance and peak shaving/energy arbitrage savings.
Support Delivery Operations - Support project execution team personnel with post-contract engineering. Lead technical review of EPC and OEM deliverables to ensure compliance with client standards and project performance requirements.
