Controller (School District Experience Required)

CFS has partnered with a public-sector educational organization in seeking an experienced REMOTE Interim Controller to provide leadership and hands-on accounting support during a critical fiscal year-end and audit period. This individual will serve as a key resource to the finance team and must be able to step in quickly with minimal training.
Job Title: Controller
Location: Hybrid in Warwick, RI or remote, depending on candidate's location
Salary Range: $100,000 - $110,000

Controller Responsibilities
  • Lead and support year-end close activities and audit preparation.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports.
  • Run and analyze reports for auditors and state reporting requirements.
  • Support AP, AR, payroll, and general accounting functions.
  • Provide guidance to accounting staff and help resolve accounting and system-related questions.
  • Ensure proper account classifications and support overall financial operations.
Controller Qualifications
  • MUST have direct accounting experience within a K-12 school district or school system.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Strong experience with financial reporting, reconciliations, month-end/year-end close, and audits.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables and VLOOKUPs.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.
  • Ability to work independently and support multiple stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Munis ERP software.
  • Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting leadership experience.
  • Experience in union and non-union environments.
