What is a remote contract job?

A remote contract job is a position where an individual is hired to perform specific tasks or projects for a company on a contractual basis, but works from a location outside of the company's physical office—often from home or another remote location. These contracts can range from short-term gigs to long-term agreements, and typically outline the scope of work, payment terms, and duration. Remote contract jobs are popular in fields like IT, writing, design, and consulting, offering flexibility for both employers and workers. Contractors are usually responsible for their own taxes and benefits, as they are not considered full-time employees.

What are the qualifications to get a remote contract job?

The primary qualifications for a remote contract job vary by position, though a college degree and several years of experience are helpful for almost all remote jobs. Employers strongly prefer to hire independent contractors who have demonstrated experience and success within the industry, so the more you've worked in your field of expertise, the easier it is to get a remote contract job doing the same type of work. Employers may also ask you to pass a test of some kind. This is especially common in areas like translation and programming. Fulfilling your responsibilities and duties in a remote contract job requires communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage your time. Many contractors partner with agencies to help find work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote contract professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract professional, strong self-management, time management, and expertise in your field—often demonstrated through a relevant degree or portfolio—are essential. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, project management systems (e.g., Asana, Trello), and electronic contract platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, reliability, and adaptability help you build trust and effectively coordinate with remote teams and clients. These skills ensure productive, high-quality work while maintaining strong client relationships from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote contract roles, and how can they be addressed?

Remote contract professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients, managing time zones, and staying motivated without direct supervision. To address these issues, it's helpful to establish regular check-ins, utilize project management tools, and set clear expectations at the start of each contract. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and a structured daily routine can improve productivity and work-life balance.

Job description

SOURCING SPECIALIST, CONTRACTS (STARLINK)

Starlink is revolutionizing global connectivity as the world's largest satellite-based ISP, powered by our vast satellite constellation and global ground infrastructure.

We're seeking a talented Contract Specialist to join our team who will focus on the negotiation and management of Starlink's contracts with global partners in regions we have ground infrastructure, including our antenna ground stations ("gateways") and points-of-presence ("PoPs"). In this role, you will negotiate complex, creative agreements with infrastructure partners to support the rapid expansion of our global ground network infrastructure. You will ensure compliance with Starlink's internal policies, work in collaboration with internal stakeholders to mitigate Starlink's exposure and risk, drive standardization of contracts and supporting documents, and advocate for the best Starlink outcomes. This position requires a motivated, proactive, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and understands the unique challenges of technical procurement.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Negotiate and manage contracts for Starlink's ground infrastructure, including colocation agreements, land leases, construction services, equipment installation, maintenance agreements, and other connectivity services with datacenters, utility providers, contractors, and telecom operators.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., engineering, legal, finance, and operations) to align contract terms with technical and regulatory requirements in different countries.
  • Conduct risk assessments, vendor evaluations, and due diligence on potential partners to minimize supply chain disruptions and ensure adherence to ITAR, export control, and environmental regulations.
  • Monitor contract performance, resolve disputes, and manage amendments or renewals to support scaling Starlink's network infrastructure in diverse geographies around the world.
  • Ensure all contracts comply with SpaceX policies, federal acquisition regulations (FAR), and international standards, while contributing to process improvements in procurement workflows.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key suppliers and stakeholders to negotiate favorable terms, volume discounts, and innovative solutions for high-availability network infrastructure.
  • Create new contract vehicles to support acquisition and scaling of new services that Starlink needs to support users around the world.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, law, supply chain management; OR 2+ years of experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating legal contracts and/or commercial terms.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience drafting, negotiating and reviewing contracts in one of the following domains: telecommunications, data centers, or infrastructure procurement.
  • Ability to learn quickly and prioritize appropriately to meet customer and company needs
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills to work as a team-player, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to conduct all activities with the highest degree of integrity
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to respond quickly to a fast-moving and ever-changing environment
  • Strong understanding of commercial contract, commercial terms, and risk management principles
  • Experience with vendor management and procurement processes in a technical or engineering-driven environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and contract management tools (e.g., Ariba, Coupa, or similar)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed
  • This position is based in Redmond, WA and requires being onsite - remote work not considered

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Sourcing Specialist/Level I: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00/per year
Sourcing Specialist/Level II: $95,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law. Company shuttles are offered to employees for roundtrip travel from select Seattle locations to the SpaceX Redmond office Monday to Friday.
