The main difference between a Remote Contract Graphic Designer and a Remote Full-Time Graphic Designer lies in employment type and work setup. Both roles require strong design skills and portfolios, but their work environments and employment terms differ significantly.

Is AI replacing graphic designers?

AI tools are increasingly used in graphic design to automate repetitive tasks and generate ideas, but they do not fully replace the creative and strategic skills of a graphic designer. Remote contract graphic designers often leverage AI to enhance productivity, but human creativity, judgment, and client communication remain essential in the design process.

What is a Remote Contract Graphic Designer?

A Remote Contract Graphic Designer is a creative professional who works on a freelance or contractual basis to provide graphic design services for clients, all while working remotely from their own location. They are responsible for creating visual concepts, digital artwork, branding materials, and other design assets tailored to client needs. Their tasks often include collaborating with clients or creative teams online, meeting deadlines, and managing multiple projects independently. This role offers flexibility in work location and schedule, but also requires strong communication, time management, and design skills.

What are the best companies for remote design?

For remote contract graphic designers, companies like Adobe, Canva, and 99designs are known for offering remote opportunities. Many organizations in tech, marketing, and advertising industries frequently hire remote designers and value skills in Adobe Creative Suite, communication tools, and self-management. Job seekers should explore freelance platforms and company career pages for current openings.

Can I work remotely as a graphic designer?

Yes, remote contract graphic designers can work from anywhere with a computer and internet connection. Many clients and companies hire remote designers for projects, often requiring skills in design software like Adobe Creative Suite and good communication skills. Remote work offers flexibility but may involve meeting deadlines and collaborating virtually.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Contract Graphic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract Graphic Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in typography and layout, and typically a degree or certification in graphic design. Mastery of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch is essential, along with knowledge of file formats and digital collaboration tools. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for managing client expectations and meeting deadlines independently. These skills ensure high-quality design output, efficient remote workflow, and successful client relationships in a competitive freelance environment.

Job description

Part-Time Contract Designer (Marketing) - Boulder, CO

This position will sit part time in our Boulder office

SumUp is a global financial technology company that helps businesses of all sizes accept payments and manage their business both in-store and online. We support millions of merchants globally across dozens of markets, and we're building a world where everyone can build a thriving business.

We're looking for a part-time, hands-on designer to join our US Growth & Marketing team. You'll be executing high-volume, high-impact creative across sales collateral and performance marketing, with a strong emphasis on Meta ads and motion.

Location: Boulder, CO (in-office)

Type: Part-time (hourly)

Who you are

You're a mid-level designer who can move quickly, take direction well, and also push work forward independently when the ask is a little fuzzy. You have strong fundamentals (layout, typography, brand consistency), a sharp eye for ad creative that performs, and you can bring designs to life with motion graphics. You're familiar with using AI platforms such as Nano Banana and VEO 3.1 to be your thought partner when appropriate.

What you'll do

- Design on-brand sales collateral, including one-pagers, decks, case studies, and enablement assets

- Produce and iterate performance marketing creative, especially Meta ads (static, carousels, lightweight motion, and short-form video assets)

- Create motion graphics for paid social, including animated text, transitions, and simple product/benefit storytelling

- Adapt concepts into multiple sizes, formats, and versions for testing (fast iteration is the job)

- Collaborate closely with marketing stakeholders (growth, partnerships, sales enablement) to turn briefs into polished creative

- Maintain and evolve templates and lightweight systems that make the team faster (toolkits, reusable ad layouts, slide templates)

You'll be great for this role if you have

- 3-5 years of relevant design experience (in-house, agency, or freelance), ideally supporting marketing and/or sales teams

- A portfolio that shows strength in both marketing design and performance creative (ads that feel like they're built to win, not just look pretty)

- Motion graphics experience (After Effects or equivalent), including social-first animation

- Strong proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)

- Solid production design skills: speed, precision, file organization, and consistency

- The ability to work from brand guidelines without making everything feel templated

- Clear communication and comfort giving/receiving feedback in a fast-paced environment

- Comfortable with ambiguous briefs that quickly evolve

- Experience manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines

Nice to have

- Experience designing for acquisition funnels (landing pages, email graphics, lightweight web assets)

- Familiarity with creative testing frameworks for Meta

- Experience in fintech, payments, or SaaS

- Background working with small business or merchant audiences

- Experience managing or contributing to brand social media channels, with an understanding of platform-native content, posting cadence, and community engagement

Benefits

- A global team with a scrappy, high-ownership culture

- A fast-moving marketing team where your work will ship, not sit in a queue

- Collaboration with stakeholders across growth, sales, and partnerships

- You'll work closely with and report to the US Senior Designer, getting hands-on exposure across the full scope of a lean, high-output marketing team

Compensation

Hourly pay range: $30-$45/hour (based on experience), not to exceed 15 hours/week
