Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Remote Contract Controls Engineer and Remote Contract Automation Engineer roles share similar credentials, work environments, and industry usage. The main difference lies in their focus: Controls Engineers primarily handle control systems and instrumentation, while Automation Engineers focus on automation systems, PLC programming, and process optimization. Both roles are essential in industrial settings and often overlap, but their specific skill sets cater to different aspects of industrial automation projects.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A remote contract controls engineer typically does not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive, specialized software, or senior management roles. Highly experienced engineers with advanced skills in automation, control systems, or project management may reach top-tier compensation, but $500,000 is rare for standard engineering positions. Compensation depends on industry, location, experience, and company size.

How can I make $100,000 a year working from home?

A Remote Contract Controls Engineer can reach a $100,000 annual income by gaining specialized skills in control systems, automation, and industry standards like IEC 61131 or PLC programming. Building experience, obtaining relevant certifications, and working for companies that offer remote roles with competitive pay are key factors in achieving this salary level.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior controls engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications in automation, often earn $300,000 or more annually, particularly in industries like oil and gas, aerospace, or high-tech manufacturing. High compensation may also depend on location, company size, and project complexity.

Can Controls Engineers work remotely?

Controls Engineers can often work remotely, especially if their role involves designing, programming, and troubleshooting control systems using software tools. However, some tasks requiring on-site installation, maintenance, or hardware interaction may necessitate physical presence. Remote work availability depends on the employer, project requirements, and the engineer's skills with remote collaboration tools.

Job description

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking an electrical engineer to join our wind and solar collection team. In this hybrid role, you will support the power delivery team, working with multidisciplinary project teams providing electrical engineering and related technical expertise. The person in this position will also be responsible for managing projects, coaching and mentoring less-experienced staff, providing technical leadership, and managing teams to meet clients' needs.

A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their technical ability and project management expertise for a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: prepare designs for DC and AC collection systems and power plant controllers. Projects will focus on design and analysis and will include preparing plans and specifications, writing reports, and developing cost estimations. The work will be related to renewable energy facilities.

  • Project management: proposal development including defining work scopes, deliverables, schedules, and budget. Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.

  • Staff development: support the growth and development of team members.

  • Collaboration: build and sustain strong relationships with clients and internal teams. Collaborate across disciplines to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

  • Experience:

    • At least 5 years of related experience working in a design capacity on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above.

    • Knowledge and experience with solar DC and AC solar collection system design.

    • Experience with power plant controllers.

    • Working knowledge of codes, standards, laws, and regulations applicable to the project assignments described above.

  • Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within one year.

  • Software: Microsoft Office.

  • Driver's license: Possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • 10+ years of related experience.

  • Experience with collection system studies, including ampacity, short circuit, reactive power, grounding, insulation coordination, harmonic, and transient overvoltage.

  • Experience with energy storage facilities.

  • Authoritative capabilities and experience applying industry-standard resource modeling and assessment techniques (PVsyst, Windographer, etc.).

  • Experience with statistical analysis of solar and wind data, resource and net energy production forecasts (including uncertainty/variability analysis and loss assumptions), design, site conditions, and technology suitability.

  • Experience with data collection, post-construction measurement campaigns (including power performance testing), and project contracts.

  • Experience with AutoCAD.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid or Remote: A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position can be based out of any of Barr's offices. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, local regulations, and Barr's needs.

  • Travel expectation: up to 10-15 percent domestic fieldwork.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Compensation: Anticipated range of $90,000-120,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
