Job description

Does the opportunity to devote your talents to a cause much greater than yourself excite you? Are you energized by the challenge of shaping growth strategies, guiding business planning, and leading teams to deepen individual engagement and expand mission impact? The Arbor Day Foundation is a place where you can do work that matters with people who care. As we say at the Foundation: life is short, love where you work.

As one of the world's largest conservation organizations, the Arbor Day Foundation inspires people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. We help people understand and use trees as a solution to global issues (like air quality, water quality, climate change, deforestation, poverty, and hunger) that are critical to survival.

We are looking for a senior leader to join our team as a Director, Membership & E-Commerce. This role is a strategic and enterprise-minded leader responsible for advancing the Foundation’s mission through meaningful connections with individuals. In this role, you’ll guide the Membership, E-commerce, and Emerging Solutions teams, helping shape growth strategies, refine business plans, and unlock new opportunities that deepen engagement and expand impact.

What you’ll do:

  • Business Planning & Investment
    • Partner with the Vice President, Membership, Marketing & Communications to shape the group’s business plan, including staffing, technology, audience priorities, and the investments needed to drive sustainable growth, mission impact, and revenue goals.
    • Guide team leaders in developing one to three-year business plans that align Foundation priorities, audience opportunity, operational realities, mission outcomes, and exceptional member and customer experience.
    • Develop clear recommendations and business cases that help the Foundation make sound portfolio decisions by balancing mission outcomes, revenue potential, cost discipline, and operational effectiveness.
    • Contribute to planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management across the group, with a focus on sustainable growth, disciplined resource use, and measurable impact.
  • Growth Leadership
    • Guide growth across membership, commerce, and emerging solutions by helping leaders identify priorities, refine business approaches, and pursue opportunities that deepen engagement, elevate the member and customer experience, and expand mission impact.
    • Bring an understanding of fundraising, membership, commerce, and audience value models to identify new opportunities for growth and mission impact.
    • Champion innovation and disciplined experimentation that help the division discover new, mission-aligned ways to engage individuals, strengthen performance, and use resources wisely.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership & Prioritization
    • Work closely with Finance, Business Intelligence, and database-focused teams to turn data into insight, guide resource allocation, and inform decisions that strengthen performance and mission impact.
    • Partner with key Foundation stakeholders to advocate for group needs, surface tradeoffs, and help prioritize initiatives in service of broader organizational goals.
    • Support the Vice President in working with key Foundation partners, helping frame decisions, build alignment, and move priorities forward.
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Serve as a coach and business thought partner to team leads across Membership, E-commerce, Emerging Solutions, and database optimization, helping them sharpen plans, evaluate opportunities, and lead effectively.
    • Lead the team responsible for member and customer database optimization, ensuring audience models, scoring, and assignment approaches support stronger engagement decisions, member value, and mission impact.
    • Build alignment across teams and functions, fostering shared accountability, collaboration, and clarity of purpose.

What you’ll bring:

  • Passion for the Foundation’s mission, nature, environmental stewardship, and people
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, non-profit management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in membership, e-commerce, fundraising, consumer engagement, or a related growth-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cross-functional strategy development; experience partnering with finance and business intelligence teams strongly preferred.
  • Strong business leadership and strategic judgement, with the ability to shape plans, evaluate tradeoffs, build sound recommendations, and balance mission impact with financial performance.
  • Proven success leading through manager or team leads, coaching leaders to grow capability and results, and building alignment across teams and functions.

 Days & Location:

This is a hybrid role located in Lincoln, Nebraska, in-office Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; optional remote work on Wednesday and Friday.

 Love Where You Work:

  • Our work changes the world. We find deep purpose in our daily work, we’re helping to shape the planet for future generations.
  • We're in this together. A culture focused on a genuine interest in the wellbeing of others, collaboration, and the intrinsic shared purpose to do what's right.
  • We pride ourselves on the culture we’ve built. We love it, and we know you will too.
  • We care about your health. We offer competitive healthcare (health, dental, vision) coverage for you and your loved ones matched with a wellness incentives program.
  • We invest in your future. Company paid short-term and long-term disability, paid parental leave, life insurance and 401k with company match are available.
  • We know the little things matter. Team members receive a monthly parking stipend, a fully stocked kitchen, and access to a plethora of benefits at Arbor Day Farm.
  • We care about your growth. We allocate 40+ hours annually for our team members to focus on learning and development.
  • We want you to unplug when needed. We believe in taking your time off without guilt, including the week between Christmas and New Years that we close our Lincoln Campus to recharge.
  • We'll round out the experience. We put our culture first, and we host events and experiences throughout the year to show that we care about you (and your family).
