Job description

REMOTE TUTOR - BIOLOGY (PT)

DALEY COLLEGE

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 68,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Reporting to the Director of Academic Support or an administrator assigned to fill the role of Director of Academic Support, the Remote Tutor (Part-Time) provides students with tutoring and instructional support in an academic or occupational area of study to help improve their academic capabilities and progress academically, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance.

Remote Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses.

Remote Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Remote Tutors may also work as embedded tutors for online-live and asynchronous courses. Performs related duties as required.

Tutors must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher in a field of study and subject area related to the subject(s) being tutored OR similar technical certification and technical training.   Specific and additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

       Provides academic assistance in tutoring to students on an individual or group basis on a wide range of subjects in an academic or occupational area. 

         Tutors students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.     

         Crafts effective tutoring plans to address tutee's weaknesses and strengths;

         Provides students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits to improve academic capabilities.

         Provides students with skills for using educational technology and computers, relevant to their area of expertise or required for the course work they support within that expertise, to improve the student's academic capabilities.

         Schedules individual tutoring sessions online, based on students requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course or discipline.   

         Assists students in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.

         Helps students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.

         Prepares students for standardized testing and provides strategies to overcome test anxiety. 

         Participates in tutor orientation and attends professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.

         May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.

         Provide ongoing communication with students, Instructors and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students

         Maintains records on tutoring activities.  Provides periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.

Embedded Tutor

         Supports the class Instructor remotely as an embedded tutor, pro-actively engaging students in     learning exercises, monitoring students' level of comprehension, and assisting students in the class struggling with materials and course content.

         Meets remotely with Instructor to discuss implementation and use of lesson plans, review feedback on learning activities, and to assess students' progress and challenges in the classroom.

         Conducts in-class presentations remotely on various strategies to improve academic capabilities    including study and note taking skills, reading comprehension skills, and writing skills, as well as other skills relevant to the embedded class but within the tutors' area of expertise.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To                          Director-Academic Support Services or an administrator assigned to fill the role of Director-Academic Support Services

QUALIFICATIONS

         Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in higher in a field of study and subject area related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training.  Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.

         High degree of demonstrated skill using Zoom, learning management systems such as D2L, and other relevant educational technologies.

         Employees working remote are responsible for providing a stable internet environment with a connection speed of at least 300 megabytes per second (Mbps).

         Completion of tutoring certification preferred.

         Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post-secondary instructional level is strongly preferred.

         Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable.

         Proficiency in the subject area to be tutored.

         High degree of proficiency in creating learning and study resources for students at a range of skill levels.

         Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s).

         Knowledge of tutoring strategies used for improving students study skills.

         Math tutors: knowledge of math software.

         Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

         Strong organizational and time management skills.

         Strong problem-solving skills.

         Skill in tutoring students at the developmental or foundational level in reading, writing, or math.

         Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.

         Ability to interact effectively with students and to motivate students to succeed. 

         Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
