Sierra7 is seeking an experienced Remote Part-Time Medical Coding Auditor to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of medical coding guidelines, compliance requirements, and auditing practices across professional and facility coding.


This is a flexible remote opportunity for experienced auditors who can commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform medical coding audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with current coding guidelines.
  • Review ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, MS-DRG, POA, and discharge disposition coding assignments.
  • Analyze medical records and validate coded data against clinical documentation.
  • Identify coding trends, compliance concerns, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Prepare audit findings, reports, and recommendations for coding and clinical teams.
  • Provide education, training, and coding guidance to coders and healthcare staff.
  • Monitor regulatory and policy updates impacting VA coding practices.
  • Support documentation improvement initiatives and ensure accurate reporting of patient care.


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or higher in healthcare or a related field.
  • 5+ years of medical coding and/or auditing experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Veteran Affairs (VA) coding experience as a VA employee or with a government contractor supporting the VA (required).
  • Experience using VIRR/WebVIRR (required).
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, healthcare documentation, and reimbursement methodologies.
  • Experience with professional and facility coding, compliance reviews, and coding education.


Required Certifications (One of the Following):

  • AHIMA or AAPC Apprentice/Associate Level Certification
  • AHIMA or AAPC Mastery Level Certification
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS


Important: To be considered, applicants must have at least two years of recent VA coding experience as either a Department of Veterans Affairs employee or with a government contractor supporting the VA.
