Senior Backend Engineer (Rust & Cloud Platform)

Sangoma is a global leader in business communications, delivering innovative cloud-based solutions including UCaaS, CCaaS, VoIP, SIP Trunking, Managed Connectivity, and Communications Platform services. We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Sangoma Meet Cloud team and help build the highly available, scalable, and secure services that power mission-critical communications for businesses around the world.

We are looking for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, building reliable cloud services, and contributing to distributed systems at scale. The ideal candidate is a strong backend developer with deep Rust experience, a passion for clean architecture, and a desire to work collaboratively in a fast-moving engineering environment.

Location: Remote (Eastern or Central Time Zones Preferred)

Your Role:
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and highly available backend services and APIs using Rust.
  • Build distributed cloud-native applications that integrate with internal systems, third-party platforms, and communications technologies.
  • Develop and maintain REST, GraphQL, and WebSocket-based services that support real-time collaboration and communications.
  • Contribute to the ongoing operation, reliability, and performance of the Sangoma Meet Cloud platform, ensuring SLA adherence and 24/7 service availability.
  • Design and implement solutions that improve scalability, resilience, observability, and security across the platform.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, DevOps, and frontend teams to deliver new features and enhancements.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions.
  • Participate in architectural discussions, technical planning, code reviews, and technology roadmap decisions.
  • Develop and improve CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code deployments, and operational automation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Your Background:

  • 5+ years of professional backend software development experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Rust development in production environments.
  • Strong experience developing and maintaining Linux-based backend services.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications and distributed systems.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD pipelines, and Git.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, GraphQL, WebSockets, HTTPS, and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Experience working with services written in Rust and collaborating across environments that include Node.js and/or Java.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Fluent English, written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with Nix and/or NixOS.
    • Experience with Tokio, Axum, Actix, or similar Rust frameworks.
    • Experience supporting high-availability SaaS platforms.
    • Experience with WebRTC, SIP, VoIP, or real-time communications technologies.
