What is a remote coder?

A Remote Coder is a professional who writes and maintains computer code for software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or any place with internet connectivity. Remote Coders collaborate with teams using online tools and are responsible for tasks such as debugging, code reviews, and implementing features. This role offers flexibility and may require strong communication skills and self-motivation to meet project deadlines. Remote Coders can work in various industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance.

What does a remote coder do?

Remote medical coders handle patient information to ensure their medical services are billed properly to their insurance company. This administrative position is sometimes referred to as medical records technicians or health information technicians. Unlike coders who work in the office, remote medical coders work from home or another location outside of the office. Remote medical coders collect, research, and file patient medical information. As a remote medical coder, your primary responsibilities include making sure that all the data in a patient’s record is accurate and up-to-date, organizing patient data within multiple databases, and using medical codes to determine reimbursement for insurance billing purposes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Coder, you need in-depth knowledge of medical coding systems, anatomy, and healthcare regulations, typically supported by a certification such as CPC, CCS, or CCA. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) software, coding tools like ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and online coding platforms is essential. Strong attention to detail, time management, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for accuracy and productivity in a remote setting. These skills ensure precise coding, compliance with healthcare standards, and reliable performance while working independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote coders and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote coders often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with team members across time zones, managing distractions in a home environment, and staying motivated without in-person supervision. To address these, it's important to utilize collaboration tools (like Slack or Zoom), set up a dedicated workspace, and establish a structured daily routine. Regular check-ins with your team and proactive communication can also help ensure alignment on project goals and deadlines.

Job description

Job Summary

At WebstaurantStore, we help businesses thrive. From everyday supplies to hard-to-find products and services, we're focused on making it easier for our customers to run their operations efficiently, profitably, and with confidence. Our private label brands are a growing part of that story, and the marketing brochure sites that represent them play a key role in building trust and communicating quality to our customers.

We're looking for a UI/UX Design Manager to lead a small team of designers shaping the marketing sites for our private label brands. You'll guide designers through discovery and delivery, helping them create polished, on-brand experiences that build trust, communicate quality, and drive customers deeper into our ecosystem.

You'll have a proven track record of leading a small team (3+) and know how to balance hands-on design work with coaching, developing designers, fostering collaboration, and partnering with marketing and engineering to bring brand experiences to life.

Responsibilities

Creative / Practice (35%)

  • Provide clear creative direction and actionable feedback to help designers grow their craft and critical thinking.
  • Partner closely with brand and marketing teams to shape the visual and narrative strategy for each private label site.
  • Maintain a high bar for quality across design outputs: interaction, visual, and experience.
  • Guide discovery work and help teams make smart tradeoffs between scope, impact, and quality.

People (35%)

  • Mentor and coach designers, supporting growth through regular feedback and goal planning.
  • Foster a culture that values curiosity, collaboration, and craft.
  • Help designers stay connected to brand goals, customer needs, and site performance.
  • Partner with senior design leadership on hiring, performance, and development plans.

Business (20%)

  • Translate brand strategy and customer insights into design priorities and deliverables for each private label site.
  • Facilitate alignment and communication between design, marketing, and development.
  • Advocate for design and brand experience in team planning and decision-making.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives that improve site usability, consistency, and performance across the private label portfolio.

Operations (10%)

  • Help evolve team processes to improve clarity, efficiency, and collaboration.
  • Contribute to and help maintain shared systems like design libraries, brand guidelines, and documentation.
  • Ensure projects are scoped, tracked, and delivered smoothly across multiple brand sites.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed while sitting/standing and interfacing with a personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Requires the regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50lbs.
Remote Work Qualifications
  • Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 75mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • Access to a home router and modem.
  • A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
  • Legal residents of one of the following states: (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.
Experience
  • 8+ years of experience in UI/UX design, with 3+ years leading designers or design teams.
  • Strong portfolio of shipped marketing or brochure sites demonstrating clear, effective brand storytelling. Track record of improving design quality and aligning work to brand and business outcomes.
  • Experience partnering with cross-functional teams and working knowledge of front-end code to bridge the gap between design and development.
  • Proficiency in Figma and familiarity with design systems, brand guidelines, UX research, and accessibility best practices.
Education

This role does not require a degree. We value relevant skills and experience and alignment with our core values above all else.

Desired Traits & Skills
  • Balances design excellence with practical delivery.
