Remote Code Review information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Code Reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Code Reviewer, you need expert knowledge of programming languages, software development best practices, and extensive experience with code review processes. Familiarity with version control systems like Git and code review tools such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective written communication, and the ability to provide constructive feedback are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure code quality, foster team collaboration, and help maintain reliable and maintainable software in distributed work environments.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in remote code review roles, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in remote code review roles is effective communication—conveying feedback clearly and constructively without face-to-face interaction. Additionally, understanding the context of code changes and ensuring consistency with team standards can be harder when working remotely. These challenges can be addressed by establishing clear review guidelines, utilizing collaborative tools like code review platforms, and maintaining regular virtual check-ins with the development team. Building strong documentation and participating in team discussions also help remote code reviewers stay aligned with project goals.

What is a remote code review?

A remote code review is the process of examining and evaluating someone’s code from a different location, often using online tools or platforms. This allows software developers to review code changes, suggest improvements, and detect bugs without being physically present with the author. Remote code reviews help ensure code quality, maintain consistency, and foster collaboration within distributed teams. Tools like GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket are commonly used to facilitate remote code reviews through features like pull requests and inline comments.

Job description

Pinterest is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Code Foundations team within Developer Foundations. In this role you'll lead a team responsible for improving the daily development experience for every Pinterest engineer by shaping the core workflows developers rely on to write, review and ship code. The team owns critical surfaces in the developer workflow including source control, developer CLIs, developer environments and code navigation.

What you'll do:

  • Lead and grow a team of 8+ engineers responsible for the language runtimes, codebase, and source control platform used by every Pinterest engineer, setting clear direction, execution standards and operational excellence for the platform
  • Own the team's roadmap in partnership with the TL, balancing strategic initiatives with operational reliability
  • Lead the agent-readiness definitions and certification for all Tier-1 repos, and establish language and monorepo standards and design enforcement
  • Own the language experience portfolio, including  runtimes, frameworks, libraries with an agent-first maintenance strategy
  • Champion AI-native development practices across the team, including spec-to-code, agents.md curation, and agent effectiveness within large codebase best practices for the broader engineering organization
  • Build a culture of developer empathy: understand the pain points of Pinterest engineers and translate them into high-impact improvements
  • Establish and improve operational practices including on-call rotations, incident response and production health metrics
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure developer workflows integrate smoothly with underlying systems
  • Hire and develop engineers, creating clear growth paths and a high-trust team environment

What we're looking for:

  • 7+ years of engineering management experience leading teams of 4+ engineers
  • Experience improving developer experience with a track record of identifying and removing friction in engineering workflows
  • Strong technical background building or operating developer platforms such as source control systems, developer CLIs, developer environments, build systems or CI/CD
  • Experience improving developer workflows and operating developer platforms at scale in large engineering environments, including ownership of on-call, reliability improvements and service health metrics
  • Ability to partner effectively with a Tech Lead to align people leadership with technical direction
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants and developer tools in day-to-day engineering work, with an ability to evaluate and adopt emerging tools effectively
  • Familiarity with how AI is transforming developer workflows - code generation, code review, agent-driven development and developer environments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical strategy to both engineers and senior leadership
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent experience
