What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Climate Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Climate Modeler, you need a strong background in atmospheric science, mathematics, and programming, often supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with climate modeling software (such as WRF or CESM), statistical analysis tools, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or Fortran are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and clear communication are vital for interpreting complex data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure accurate climate predictions, effective research outcomes, and informed decision-making in environmental policy and planning.

What are some common challenges faced when collaborating remotely as a climate modeler, and how can they be addressed?

Remote climate modelers often work with interdisciplinary teams spread across different time zones, which can make real-time communication and data sharing challenging. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to establish clear communication channels and regular virtual meetings to align on project goals and timelines. Leveraging collaborative tools for code versioning, data management, and documentation also helps ensure smooth teamwork. Staying proactive about updates and maintaining open lines of feedback can significantly improve coordination and project outcomes.

What is remote climate modeling?

Remote climate modeling refers to the use of computer simulations and data analysis to study and predict climate patterns, typically from a remote location rather than a traditional office or laboratory. Professionals in this field use various climate models to understand atmospheric, oceanic, and land processes and assess future climate scenarios. This work often involves collaborating with scientists, analyzing large datasets, and using advanced software tools. Remote positions allow climate modelers to contribute to important environmental research while working from anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

Job description

Description
The Jones Lab at Georgetown University uses innovative techniques to map greenhouse gas emissions both locally and around the world. The lab is actively engaged in sensor development, field work, and the analysis of data from satellites and aircraft. The lab is hiring 1-2 Postdoctoral Research Associate(s), who will work with Professor Taylor Jones on projects such as:
  • Developing new statistical methods for the interpretation of atmospheric greenhouse gas data from satellites
  • Designing, building, and operating novel environmental sensors for basic research and science communication
  • Creating web-portals and visualizations for complex data
  • Building models and sensors for the estimation of ecosystem carbon exchange in urban and forested environments.

Candidates will be expected to contribute to collaborative projects and to help build the newly established lab. Candidates will have the opportunity for conference travel and to build their research experience in a way that supports their career goals. In addition, they will be part of a vibrant and growing community of Earth and environmental scholars at Georgetown University. This position will involve close collaboration with partners at institutions such as NASA, NIST, and other universities.
The position is based in Washington D.C. and will start as soon as Summer 2024 or as late as Fall 2024 for a 1 to 2 year appointment. The salary is commensurate with experience. Although these positions are fully funded, it is expected that the candidate would contribute to the writing of one or more grant applications.
Applicants must have a PhD by Summer of 2024 in atmospheric science, environmental science, statistics, data science, engineering, or related field.
Qualifications
  • A strong personal desire to make the world a better place through science
  • Expertise in quantitative modeling, computational and/or Bayesian methods
  • Expertise using at least one programming languages in the analysis of scientific data such as R, Python, Matlab, or Julia.
  • Expertise in modeling Atmospheric circulation and/or trace gas emissions
  • Expertise with remote sensing data products, particularly XCO2, XCH4, or SIF
  • Engineering skills such as CAD drawing, 3D printing, PCB design, or microcontroller programming.
  • Internet-of-things (IoT) network and dashboard design
  • Experience in atmospheric and/or environmental science fieldwork.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong collaborative and organizational skills
  • Interests and expertise in climate policy
