Summary
This position is located in the Office of Programs; Retirement Benefits Division; Post Section A. The incumbent will be responsible for performing a full range of standard and non-standard clerical work.
This job announcement may be used to fill one or more vacancies.
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by the Council of AFGE Locals in the Board.

As a Claims Assistant, you will:
  • Analyze and evaluate a variety of different items to determine the best course of action to take to properly resolve the work item.
  • Photocopy, screen and search/match work items, answer telephones (respond to general inquiries and take messages), open/deliver mail.
  • Operate an image processing system, which converts documents for subsequent adjudication and review by RRB personnel.
  • Review documents to ensure that it is properly prepared for imaging.
  • Be responsible for indexing documents to ensure beneficiary's information is not merged and that electronic documents can be found.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for GS-05 level:
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience is defined as work experience that involves performing a wide variety of clerical and administrative office duties.; OR
B. Four years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.; OR
C. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
