Remote Civil Engineering Drafter information

What is a remote civil engineering drafter?

A Remote Civil Engineering Drafter is a professional who creates technical drawings and plans for civil engineering projects, such as roads, bridges, and buildings, while working from a remote location. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to develop detailed drawings that guide construction and engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include interpreting engineer sketches, revising plans, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards. Working remotely allows them to collaborate with engineers and project managers via digital communication tools. This flexibility enables companies to hire skilled drafters regardless of their geographic location.

How do remote civil engineering drafters typically collaborate with engineers and project teams while working offsite?

Remote Civil Engineering Drafters often rely on digital collaboration tools such as BIM software, cloud-based file sharing, and video conferencing to work closely with engineers and project managers. Regular virtual meetings and screen-sharing sessions help ensure alignment on project specifications, design changes, and deadlines. Clear communication and organized documentation are essential to keep projects moving smoothly and to address any technical questions quickly. While working remotely offers flexibility, it also requires proactive engagement to stay connected and maintain productivity within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote civil engineering drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Civil Engineering Drafter, you need proficiency in civil drafting principles, a solid understanding of engineering drawings, and often an associate degree or equivalent experience in drafting or CAD. Expertise in industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and knowledge of GIS systems or BIM tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in a distributed work environment. These skills ensure accurate project documentation, seamless collaboration with engineering teams, and successful project delivery from a remote setting.

What is the difference between Remote Civil Engineering Drafter vs Remote Structural Drafter?

AspectRemote Civil Engineering DrafterRemote Structural Drafter
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or DraftingAssociate's or Bachelor's in Structural Engineering or Drafting
Work EnvironmentDesigning civil projects like roads, bridges, and land developmentCreating structural plans for buildings, bridges, and frameworks
Industry UsageUsed across construction, land development, and infrastructure sectorsPrimarily in construction, architecture, and engineering firms
Comparison Search IntentOften compared due to similar drafting skills and project typesRelated but focuses on structural components rather than civil infrastructure

Remote Civil Engineering Drafters and Remote Structural Drafters share similar skills and work environments, but they specialize in different project types. Civil Drafters focus on infrastructure and land development, while Structural Drafters concentrate on building frameworks. Both roles require relevant engineering or drafting certifications and are essential in the construction industry.

Job description

We are designing the grid of the future!

Join our innovative team as an Engineering Drafter, where you will play a key role in producing and coordinating detailed engineering CAD deliverables for electrical infrastructure projects, including but not limited to generation plants and substations. This position is remote and involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary project teams and construction stakeholders to deliver accurate, code-compliant, and construction-ready engineering packages.

How you can make an impact:

  • Detailed Engineering Drafting: Develop and review detailed engineering drawings and documentation for electrical generation facilities, including site plans, single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, electrical details, electrical notes, schematics, panel views, cable and conduit schedules, equipment layouts, and grounding plans using AutoCAD and/or CAD-based design platforms.
  • Design Coordination: Collaborate with lead engineers, project managers, and discipline leads to ensure drawing packages are technically accurate, internally consistent, and aligned with applicable standards (IEEE, NEC, IEC) and client specifications.
  • Project Support: Support engineering design from conceptual through IFC (Issued for Construction) phases, incorporating review comments, RFI responses, and field markups into drawing revisions.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Interface with civil/structural, mechanical, and protection & controls disciplines to resolve design conflicts and ensure coordination across drawing sets.
  • Documentation & Document Control: Maintain drawing registers, revision logs, and deliverable trackers in alignment with project schedules and document control protocols.

Performance Criteria:

  • Timely and accurate production of detailed engineering drawing packages across all project phases.
  • Effective incorporation of review comments and field feedback into drawing revisions.
  • Consistent coordination across disciplines and clear communication with project teams.
  • Adherence to applicable engineering standards, client specifications, and internal QA/QC procedures.

Bring your passion, here's whatโ€™s needed:

Qualifications:

  • Associate's diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting & Design, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; equivalent CAD platform such as MicroStation is a plus.
  • 3+ years experience supporting high level drafting for utility level substations and electrical generation systems.
  • Familiarity with standard drawing types such as SLDs, schematics, layouts, CWDs, and EWDs.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation.
  • Advanced proficiency in English.

Preferred Experience:

  • Exposure to other utility-scale generation technologies: solar PV, BESS, wind, or conventional generation.
  • Familiarity with utility and interconnection drawing requirements (e.g., POI packages, protection & metering one-lines).
  • Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, and IEC standards applicable to electrical generation facilities.
