What does a remote chief technology officer do?

A remote chief technology officer (CTO) is an executive who oversees the technological framework of an organization from outside of the office. Specific job duties vary, depending on the size of the company and number of staff. Some remote chief technology officers focus on in-house infrastructure and internal data, and implement necessary security measures for employees. They analyze technical issues related to the system design and determine how and when changes need to be made. CTOs also establish the technical strategy of how technology is used at the company. Other remote chief technology officers concentrate on the customer-side of a business and its research and development of new products. While the majority of their tasks are completed remotely, they typically need to attend meetings with staff in the office on a regular basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote chief technology officer?

To thrive as a Remote Chief Technology Officer, you need deep expertise in software development, architecture, and IT management, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering and significant leadership experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms, DevOps tools, cybersecurity frameworks, and project management systems is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or PMP. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to build and lead distributed teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure effective technology strategy, seamless execution, and strong alignment between business and technical goals in a remote environment.

How does a remote chief technology officer effectively lead and collaborate with distributed engineering teams?

As a Remote CTO, effective leadership hinges on clear communication, strategic use of collaboration tools, and regular check-ins with team leads. You'll need to establish transparent processes for project management, encourage open feedback, and set clear expectations for deliverables across different time zones. Building a strong remote culture and fostering trust are key, as you’re responsible for aligning technology vision with business goals while ensuring your team feels supported and engaged, even from a distance.

Who we are

The News Literacy Project, founded in 2008, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building a national movement to ensure that all students are guaranteed to be skilled in news literacy before high school graduation, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers. NLP is the country's leading provider of news literacy education and works with districts and educators in all 50 states, primarily through our signature e-learning platform, Checkology®, and weekly educator newsletter, The Sift®. • Oversee district technology approvals, security reviews, vendor questionnaire and procurement-related technical documentation, and maintain readiness for audits and compliance reviews.
  • Ensure systems support district requirements including identity management, rostering, integrations, accessibility and data governance.
  • Maintain security controls, access governance and security awareness programs, and develop policies governing technology use and information security.
  • Monitor organizational technology risk and report regularly to executive leadership.

Technology Operations, Architecture & Vendor Management

  • Lead strategy and performance management of the managed IT services partner, defining service expectations, SLAs, escalation process and accountability mechanisms.
  • Oversee internal technology operations including devices and collaboration tools; identity management, networking and help desk effectiveness, ensuring staff have reliable, secure and scalable technology support.
  • Partner with data leadership to build and maintain the infrastructure that enables organizational measurement, reporting and impact analysis, ensuring responsible use of organizational data.
  • Establish standards for architecture, integrations, technical quality and platform sustainability, and oversee application lifecycle management, technical debt prioritization and platform reliability.
  • Guide build-versus-buy decisions and oversee technology vendor selection, contract negotiation, performance management and ROI evaluation.
