Earning $300,000 as a chemical engineer is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced specialization, management roles, or working in high-paying industries such as oil and gas or pharmaceuticals. Most chemical engineers earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, with top earners in senior positions or with significant expertise reaching higher salaries. Achieving a $300,000 salary often involves leadership responsibilities, advanced degrees, or working in regions with higher compensation standards.

Job description

About SPEC Services

SPEC Services is a 200+ person engineering services firm with more than 45 years supporting the energy sector. We are known for practical solutions, responsive service, and long-standing client relationships, with a culture focused on technical excellence and doing the work the right way in operating and brownfield environments.

Summary of the Role

As a Senior Project Manager, you will lead and deliver midstream engineering projects, including gas and liquids facilities, pipelines, and related infrastructure, such as brownfield modifications, terminal and storage facilities, compression systems, pipeline expansions and replacements, metering and regulating stations, custody transfer and measurement systems, and associated tie-ins and pipeline appurtenances. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, serve as the primary client point of contact, and drive project outcomes through disciplined execution, risk management, and clear communication. This role is focused on delivery leadership and client trust, not sales or EPC-style project delivery.

What Sets This Role Apart

  • Autonomy & Ownership: Lead projects end-to-end with direct accountability and the latitude to make decisions that matter.
  • Direct Client Impact: Build trust as the face of SPEC to operator clients, without layers of bureaucracy.
  • Leadership Access: Work closely with senior leadership and contribute to the direction and culture of a growing Houston office.
  • Project Variety: Engage with a range of challenging, meaningful midstream projects; no two are exactly alike.
  • Visible Career Path: Grow your career in an organization that recognizes project ownership, practical results, and technical excellence.
  • Stable & Trusted: Join a team with a strong reputation for reliability, technical quality, and client service.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management and Delivery

  • Lead multiple concurrent, multidisciplinary midstream engineering projects.
  • Own scope, schedule, budget, quality, and delivery commitments from kickoff through completion.
  • Develop project execution plans, staffing strategies, and delivery schedules aligned to project requirements.
  • Coordinate across mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, process, and pipeline engineering to deliver integrated packages.
  • Lead constructability planning in operating facilities, including tie-in, phasing, and work sequencing considerations.
  • Manage execution risks, scope growth, and change requests.
  • Oversee QA/QC implementation and technical consistency across deliverables and disciplines.

Client Leadership

  • Lead client working sessions, progress reviews, and technical discussions with a practical approach.
  • Build long-term client relationships through reliable delivery.

Team and Office Support

  • Mentor project managers and engineers on client engagement.
  • Support staffing, workload balancing, and team development activities in coordination with discipline leadership.
  • Reinforce SPECโ€™s delivery culture across projects with a focus on safety, quality, and accountability.

Reporting & Organizational Fit

This position reports directly to SPECโ€™s Midstream Division Manager. Youโ€™ll be part of a high-caliber, highly trusted team that values ownership, execution, and meaningful influence. Our leaders are committed to supporting your growth and ensuring your contributions are recognized.

Location & Work Schedule

Based in the Greater Houston area, this hybrid role supports local clients and teams with a flexible 9/80 work schedule. SPEC operates with its corporate headquarters in Southern California, with Houston serving as a key hub for midstream project execution and client engagement. Expect a mix of office and remote work, with some travel (20-30%) to project sites, client meetings, and SPECโ€™s offices.

What You Bring

  • Proven ability to earn client trust through competence and performance.
  • Experience leading and delivering technical projects in the oil and gas or midstream sector.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • A practical, results-focused approach, with a strong personal drive to take ownership and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Desire to perform high-quality work as part of a trusted, high-performing team.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering preferred, or equivalent relevant experience
  • 10+ years of broad experience in engineering, project engineering, and/or project management, including over 7 years in midstream or technically related project work
  • Experience leading technical workstreams, client coordination, and project delivery
  • Prior consulting or engineering services firm experience preferred

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Solid understanding of midstream facilities, systems, codes, and industry standards
  • Ability to lead teams and coordinate across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Practical, solutions-oriented problem solver
  • Comfortable working directly with clients and internal technical teams
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed

Preferred Certifications

  • Project Management Professional PMP
  • Professional Engineer PE

Work With Impact. Rewards That Support You.

We offer competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage; life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance; long-term disability coverage; a 401(k) with profit sharing; and, for this position, performance-based incentives.
