Remote Chat Agent information

What is a remote chat agent?

Remote chat agents are customer service professionals who assist customers via online chat platforms, rather than over the phone or in person. They work from a remote location, such as their home, using computers and internet connections to communicate with clients or customers. Their main responsibilities include answering questions, resolving issues, providing product or service information, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Remote chat agents often work for various industries, including retail, technology, and financial services, offering support through live chat, messaging apps, or social media.

What does a remote chat agent do?

A remote chat agent answers customer questions through an online chat platform. Your primary responsibilities are to assist customers and troubleshoot issues. You address minor problems and escalate complicated situations to the proper resources. You connect with clients quickly and provide live help. Your duties include using the chat platform, diagnosing the client's problem, communicating until full satisfaction, and assisting with resolutions. A remote chat agent can work in a call center, office environment, or from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote chat agent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Chat Agent, you need excellent written communication, strong typing skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, chat platforms, and ticketing software is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, patience, and attention to detail help agents deliver a positive customer experience. These skills are crucial for efficiently resolving customer inquiries and maintaining high satisfaction in a remote, fast-paced environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote chat agents, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Chat Agents often encounter challenges such as handling multiple conversations simultaneously, maintaining a consistent and friendly tone, and resolving customer issues efficiently without face-to-face interaction. Effective time management, clear written communication skills, and familiarity with the company’s resources and support tools are essential for success. Many organizations provide training, knowledge bases, and regular team check-ins to help agents stay informed and supported while working remotely.

Job description

About Luminary
Luminary is the AI-native system of action for wealth transfer services.
High net worth households controlling more than $90 trillion in assets are meaningfully underserved by technology that was built for the mass market. As private client investment and banking products have commoditized, these clients are looking for more tax and wealth transfer advice, advice that has previously been impossible to deliver at scale.
Luminary solves this problem by transforming complex estate planning and ownership documents into a structured, proprietary data asset that powers verticalized, agent-driven workflows for tax and wealth transfer services. Our built-in multi-firm collaboration connects a client's full advisor ecosystem, and is the core infrastructure that enables our customers to deliver a highly personalized, end-to-end wealth transfer service offering at scale.
Our 1,000+ customers are leaders across the private client services ecosystem: wealth managers from exclusive multi-family offices through top private banks and trust companies, national tax advisory practices, and law firms among the AM Law 100. Our focus and proprietary data position us to expand from a wedge in wealth transfer advice into large adjacent markets including trust administration and estate distribution.
Founded and led by CEO David Barnard, former Head of Wealth Management at AllianceBernstein, Luminary is backed by 8VC, Fin Capital, Rockefeller Capital, Focus Financial Partners, and several family offices.
How we work
  • Every engineer ships to production multiple times a day. We make small, reviewable changes that go out through CI as soon as they're ready.
  • Modern tooling. Meticulous, Amp, Honeycomb, Temporal, PostHog, Braintrust. We keep the team small and invest in tooling for leverage.
  • Engineers own outcomes. You'll talk to customers and feel their wins and pain points, sit with our in-house subject matter experts, and help us build a great business.
  • We support both remote and in-office preferences. We have an office in NYC near Bryant Park and a lively in-office culture, but if remote works better for you, you'll be in good company.
The Opportunity
You'll own features end to end. You'll hear an idea from a customer conversation, then craft the data model and build the interface an advisor uses while sitting next to a client. (Then the customer will email support to tell them how valuable it is for them!)
You'll work on features spanning document ingestion, knowledge graph generation, tax and wealth transfer modeling, multiplayer collaboration tooling, chat agents, complex diagram-based UI, and agentic advisory and trust administration workflows.
What you'll do
  • Build agents with agents. Most of what we ship now has an agentic surface: a chat affordance, an ambient agent working in the background, a tool a model can call. You'll be designing those, and you'll be using coding agents (we use Amp) heavily to build them.
  • Use existing patterns, and call out when one has stopped working. We have common conventions for data modeling, GraphQL, and component architecture, and they generally work! But not always, and you'll know when to break out of them.
  • Learn the domain from people who know it. Estate planning is complicated in ways that aren't obvious from outside. Our wealth strategies team sits with engineers, and advisors, attorneys, and federal and state officials will take your call.
  • Work closely with design. Experienced product designers, turning tax and legal concepts into something an advisor can use in a live client meeting.
Who you are
Four or more years of software engineering experience, at companies with strong engineering practices, and ideally at startups. Beyond that:
  • Comfortable across the stack. You enjoy doing data modeling in Postgres, building product functionality in Go, and building interfaces in React and TypeScript. That said, we know you'll lean one direction! We all do too.
  • Product-minded. You gather context, watch customers use the app, form opinions about what customers need and share them.
  • Technically skilled. Familiarity with cloud web applications and complex data models helps, as does familiarity with any of React, TypeScript, GraphQL (Apollo), Playwright, Go, Postgres, and Temporal. We aren't dogmatic about any of it, and curiosity substitutes fine for experience.
  • You communicate well. With half the team remote, overcommunication is the name of the game!
Why you'll love working here
  • You'll be one of a small, senior team of engineers building a complex and high-value product. You'll get a lot of trust and responsibility early on.
  • You'll work closely with our CEO, Head of Engineering, and Head of Product.
  • You'll help build foundational product in a nascent category, with a lot of room to expand into large adjacent markets.
  • You'll ship constantly and hear fast feedback from customers.

We earnestly believe that Luminary represents a one-of-a-kind opportunity to have massive impact at profitable scale, and to have a ton of fun along the way.
Benefits we offer
We believe firmly that happy, healthy employees do their best work. To that end, we offer:
  • 100% employee health insurance coverage (plus 50% dependent coverage)
  • Monthly wellness, commuter, and educational stipends
  • 4 weeks PTO, plus holidays
  • NYC office near Bryant Park, for those who want it. Remote-friendly by default.
  • 401(k) plan
  • Parental leave policy

Compensation
  • Base salary range of $170k-$225k, plus meaningful equity. Actual compensation depends on many factors, including relevant experience and skillset.
  • At this time, Luminary is unable to sponsor employment visas or provide immigration support.
