What is a remote CDL instructor?

Remote CDL Instructors are certified professionals who train and prepare students to obtain their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) through online or virtual platforms. They deliver instruction on driving laws, safety protocols, and vehicle operation using digital tools, video conferencing, and simulation software. While they may not provide hands-on driving experience directly, they guide students through theoretical coursework and prepare them for the written and skills portions of the CDL exam. This role is ideal for experienced drivers or instructors who want to work from home or in a flexible environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote CDL instructor?

To thrive as a Remote CDL Instructor, you need a valid CDL license, extensive commercial driving experience, and instructional training or certification. Familiarity with online training platforms, video conferencing tools, and digital assessment systems is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and guide students remotely are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure effective virtual instruction, regulatory compliance, and successful student outcomes in commercial driver education.

What are some common challenges faced by remote CDL instructors and how can they be addressed?

Remote CDL instructors often face challenges such as ensuring effective communication, maintaining student engagement, and adapting hands-on training to a virtual format. To overcome these, instructors utilize interactive video conferencing tools, digital simulations, and clear, structured lesson plans. Collaborating closely with students and offering flexible office hours can also help address individual learning needs. Staying up-to-date with technology and regularly seeking feedback from students are key strategies for success in this remote teaching environment.

Job description

Company Description
The sky's not the limit at Nearmap
For more than 30 years, itel has been the trusted source of certainty in property insurance. Carriers rely on itel for verified materials pricing and independent materials analysis. That data settles claims accurately, defensibly, and fast.
In 2025, itel joined Nearmap, the property intelligence pioneer. Together we give insurers one view of a property: high-resolution imagery, AI-driven insights, and verified materials pricing. Our customers use it to see truth, assess risk, and act with certainty.
Job Description
The Account Manager owns the relationship with a portfolio of insurance customers already live on itel solutions. You learn how each carrier actually works, find where their claims process loses time or money, and show them how itel closes that gap.
This is an adoption and growth role, not a support queue. You build relationships across every layer of the customer organization, from desk adjusters through to claims leadership, and with the third parties in their workflow. Everyone stays aligned on the outcomes the account signed up for.
You partner internally with Sales, Customer Experience, Operations, Finance, and Executive Management, plus the wider Nearmap go-to-market team as insurance customers adopt across both portfolios.
Own the customer relationship
  • Act as the primary point of contact for an assigned portfolio of live accounts.
  • Meet with customers on a regular cadence to understand their priorities, pressures, and plans.
  • Build relationships at multiple levels: adjusters, examiners, claims managers, procurement, and executive sponsors.
  • Prioritize, escalate, and oversee customer issues through to resolution.
  • Log every touchpoint in the CRM so account history stays complete and accurate.

Drive adoption and usage
  • Work with customer leadership to build usage strategies tied to their specific claims guidelines and thresholds.
  • Engage end users directly to grow use of solutions already implemented.
  • Identify accounts where usage sits below expectation, diagnose the cause, and act on it.
  • Run adoption initiatives and report on them with clear before-and-after numbers.

Review, report, and forecast
  • Conduct regular account reviews covering activity, usage trends, and results against agreed outcomes.
  • Deliver accurate forecasts and account health reporting to sales leadership.
  • Surface risk early, with a plan attached.

Grow the account
  • Spot expansion opportunities across itel and the wider Nearmap portfolio, and bring in the right specialists.
  • Collaborate with the other sellers in your pod to support shared accounts.
  • Maintain deep working knowledge of all itel solutions and a solid grasp of Nearmap property intelligence products.

Qualifications
Required
  • Five or more years in account management, customer success, or sales, ideally in a data or software business.
  • Property and casualty (P&C) insurance experience, particularly claims, restoration, or building materials.
  • A track record of growing usage or revenue inside an existing book of business.
  • Confidence building relationships from frontline users up to the executive suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, and genuine comfort on the phone.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities without losing the detail.
  • Energy for a fast-moving business that is still growing and changing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, plus a CRM (Salesforce preferred).
  • Willingness to travel nationally up to 40%, sometimes on short notice.
  • Valid driver license with proof of insurance.

Preferred
  • Bachelor degree in business or a related field.
  • Experience servicing claims organizations at national carriers.
  • Familiarity with geospatial, imagery, or property data products.
