What is a remote CCNA Routing and Switching job?

Remote CCNA Routing and Switching jobs involve working from a remote location to design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot network infrastructures, primarily using Cisco technologies. These roles typically require a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification focused on routing and switching. Job responsibilities may include configuring routers and switches, monitoring network performance, and providing technical support for network-related issues. Remote positions allow professionals to work from home or other locations outside of a traditional office, leveraging secure connectivity tools. These jobs are in demand as companies increasingly support distributed workforces and need reliable network infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote CCNA Routing and Switching professional?

To thrive as a Remote CCNA Routing and Switching professional, you need a solid understanding of networking concepts, TCP/IP protocols, and hands-on experience with routers and switches, typically validated by the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification. Familiarity with Cisco IOS, network monitoring tools, and remote troubleshooting platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and self-motivation are important soft skills for working independently and resolving technical issues remotely. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensuring secure, efficient network operations and effective support in a remote work environment.

What are some unique challenges of working remotely as a CCNA Routing and Switching professional, and how can I overcome them?

Working remotely as a CCNA Routing and Switching professional often involves managing network infrastructure and troubleshooting issues without direct, on-site access to hardware. This can make diagnosing physical connectivity issues or configuring devices more challenging. To overcome these obstacles, remote professionals rely heavily on remote desktop tools, detailed documentation, and strong communication with on-site staff. Proactively setting up clear escalation processes and leveraging network monitoring tools can also help maintain smooth operations and minimize downtime.

The Opportunity

The Network Engineer designs, implements, administers, and supports the organization's network infrastructure and connectivity across corporate, project, and field environments. This role provides technical expertise for daily network operations and delivers scalable connectivity solutions for construction projects, project offices, temporary facilities, and remote jobsites. Working collaboratively with IT, project management, construction, facilities, cybersecurity, vendors, contractors, and telecommunications providers, the Network Engineer helps ensure network services are reliable, secure, efficient, and aligned with operational requirements. The position provides primarily remote support with periodic travel when on-site deployment or hands-on troubleshooting is required.

What you will do?

  • Design, configure, administer, maintain, and troubleshoot LAN, WAN, wireless, VPN, Internet, and secure remote-connectivity solutions across corporate and field locations
  • Deploy and support network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, VPN solutions, cabling dependencies, and related network technologies
  • Monitor network availability, performance, capacity, utilization, and connectivity; analyze trends and resolve conditions that may affect reliability or user experience
  • Provide network engineering and technical support for corporate offices, construction jobsites, project offices, temporary facilities, and other geographically distributed locations
  • Assess connectivity requirements for new project locations and develop practical network solutions that address Internet service, wireless coverage, equipment, security, scalability, and project timelines
  • Coordinate with project managers, construction teams, facilities personnel, vendors, contractors, Internet service providers, and telecommunications partners to plan and execute installations and service activations
  • Configure, stage, test, deploy, and maintain network equipment for new and existing locations, ensuring solutions meet established technical and security standards
  • Troubleshoot network, Internet, Wi-Fi, VPN, routing, switching, firewall, and other connectivity issues remotely, escalating to or coordinating on-site support when hands-on assistance is required
  • Maintain secure connectivity between remote or field locations and the broader enterprise network environment while supporting appropriate access, segmentation, and business continuity
  • Implement and maintain network security controls, including firewall configurations, VPN access, network segmentation, access restrictions, and secure configuration standards
  • Collaborate with Cybersecurity and other IT teams to identify network vulnerabilities, investigate security concerns, reduce risk, and support remediation activities
  • Coordinate with third-party service providers to diagnose and resolve Internet, circuit, telecommunications, hardware, and connectivity incidents within established service expectations
  • Participate in network upgrades, infrastructure refreshes, migrations, new-site deployments, cloud-connectivity initiatives, and other enterprise technology projects
  • Evaluate network technologies and recommend improvements that strengthen reliability, security, performance, manageability, resiliency, and scalability
  • Develop and maintain accurate network diagrams, equipment inventories, configurations, standards, support procedures, implementation records, and operational documentation
  • Follow established change-management practices when testing and implementing network changes, including validation, communication, rollback planning, and post-change review
  • Provide technical guidance and escalation support to Service Desk personnel and other IT teams, including knowledge transfer and documented troubleshooting steps
  • Support scheduled maintenance, critical network incidents, and service-restoration activities, including after-hours work when required by business or operational needs
  • Travel periodically to project sites, offices, equipment rooms, and other company locations to support installations, upgrades, assessments, or complex technical issues
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered
  • 5 plus years of experience administering and supporting enterprise network environments
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, switching, VPN technologies, wireless networking, and network segmentation
  • Hands-on experience configuring, deploying, monitoring, and troubleshooting enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, and related equipment
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed offices, remote locations, construction projects, jobsites, temporary facilities, or comparable field environments
  • Working knowledge of network security principles, firewall policies, secure remote access, access controls, vulnerability remediation, and infrastructure hardening
  • Experience with network monitoring, packet analysis, configuration management, logging, and troubleshooting tools
  • Ability to diagnose complex connectivity issues, perform root-cause analysis, and deliver sustainable technical solutions
