Job description

We are currently looking for a Senior Kubernetes Platform Administrator for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. In this role, you will serve as the technical lead for the Brain Team, responsible for the engineering, operation, reliability, scalability, security, and automation of an enterprise Kubernetes platform running on Amazon EKS. You will provide subject matter expertise in Kubernetes, networking, cloud infrastructure, and platform engineering while partnering with development, security, and adjacent platform teams.

The ideal candidate will bring deep hands-on experience administering production Kubernetes environments, Amazon EKS, Kubernetes networking, Cilium, Istio, Terraform, AWS, and GitOps. This role also requires strong technical leadership and mentoring skills, with a focus on building highly automated, secure-by-default platform capabilities and supporting FISMA High compliance objectives.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for the Brain Team, providing subject matter expertise in Kubernetes architecture, networking, cloud infrastructure, and platform engineering while mentoring other engineers.
  • Design, deploy, maintain, and optimize production Kubernetes clusters running on Amazon EKS, including node lifecycle management, autoscaling, and capacity planning using Karpenter.
  • Lead Kubernetes networking initiatives using Cilium and Istio, including service mesh, ingress, network policies, and traffic management.
  • Develop and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) while following AWS best practices and security standards.
  • Drive platform automation through GitOps, GitHub, and GitHub Actions while collaborating with development, security, and platform teams to deliver secure and scalable capabilities.
  • Troubleshoot complex platform, networking, and application issues across distributed systems while implementing secure-by-default platform standards and operational controls to support FISMA High compliance objectives.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Copilot, to improve engineering productivity and platform automation.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of infrastructure or platform engineering experience, including 5+ years administering production Kubernetes environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Amazon EKS, Kubernetes architecture, and Linux administration.
  • Deep understanding of Kubernetes networking with hands-on experience using Cilium and Istio.
  • Strong experience with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and AWS cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience implementing GitOps workflows using GitHub and GitHub Actions.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and technical documentation abilities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with experience working in Agile software development teams and cross-functional technical environments.

Additional Qualifications

  • Kubernetes certifications such as CKA, CKS, or CKAD, and AWS or Terraform certifications.
  • Experience with Argo CD, Argo Rollouts, Kyverno, Kubernetes policy management, Helm, Kustomize, or Gateway API.
  • Experience implementing secure CI/CD and Continuous ATO (cATO) pipelines, container security and vulnerability scanning using Aqua or similar tools, and AWS security and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience with platform engineering, internal developer portals, and observability platforms such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Experience supporting FISMA or other regulated environments and working with cloud-native security and compliance requirements.

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • All selected candidates must successfully complete a background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including required fingerprinting, when required for the position.
