Unlike bookkeepers who work in the office, remote bookkeepers work from home or another location of their choice with a Wi-Fi connection. They may be on the staff at the company, or they may be self-employed. Their job duties include recording all transactions, posting debits and credits into a general ledger, and producing financial statements and other reports for the management of the company. Remote bookkeepers often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication with clients, managing time effectively across different projects, and staying updated with evolving accounting software. To address these, it's crucial to establish regular check-ins with clients, use project management tools for organization, and continuously improve technical skills through online training. Additionally, setting up a secure and distraction-free workspace helps ensure accuracy and confidentiality in financial recordkeeping.

What is a remote bookkeeper?

Remote bookkeepers are financial professionals who manage and record a business’s financial transactions from a location outside of the client’s office, often working from home or another remote setting. They use online accounting software and digital communication tools to track income, expenses, payroll, and reconcile accounts. This allows businesses to maintain accurate financial records without needing an in-house bookkeeper. Remote bookkeeping is popular with small businesses seeking flexibility and cost savings. The work is typically organized, detail-oriented, and requires strong communication skills.

How much do remote bookkeepers make?

Remote bookkeepers typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $30,000 to $60,000 depending on experience, certifications, and the complexity of the bookkeeping tasks. Many remote bookkeepers work freelance or for small businesses, and those with accounting software skills and certifications like QuickBooks may command higher rates.

  • Help improve the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of close deliverables
  • Support financial reporting activities - internal reporting schedules and management reporting support
  • Help identify and resolve accounting discrepancies, open items, and process gaps
  • Play an active role in maintenance cost reporting and tracking; driving initiatives for continuous improvement

Accounting Operations & Process Improvement

  • Partner with Supply Chain Manager to implement inventory (parts and assets) management processes. Collaborate on process improvements and operational excellence and complete quarterly inventory counts
  • Assist with process improvements related to reconciliations, accruals, expense classification, close management, and documentation
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for recurring accounting processes

What makes you a great fit:

Required

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Experience supporting financial audits, audit readiness, or external auditor requests
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including comfort working with supporting schedules and account reconciliations
  • Ability to operate independently, manage multiple priorities, and drive work to completion
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and project management skills with a strong attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Experience with NetSuite or similar accounting systems
  • Experience improving close processes, accounting documentation, or audit support workflows
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with evolving systems and processes

Our goal is to attract and reward top talent who will have significant impact, and we are open to thoughtful discussions to align on the right structure.

Compensation Range:
$80,000—$120,000 USD

What we look for:

We're building this company from the ground up, and every person we hire has an outsized impact on our culture, performance, and trajectory. While each team member brings unique strengths and perspectives, we look for people who align with our Operating Principles and embody them in action. If this sounds like you, Formic may be the right place for you!

  • Create the Magic: You absorb complexity so customers don't have to. Whether your customer is external or internal, you focus on delivering experiences that are clear, fast, value-added, and outcome-driven. You don't say "not my job." You make things work.
  • Today, Not Tomorrow: You have a bias to action. You close the loop. You take extreme ownership. You understand that speed compounds, and you don't confuse activity with results.
  • Seek Truth: You think from first principles. You value data over ego and strong opinions loosely held. You're willing to challenge assumptions, including your own, in pursuit of the best answer.
  • Made of Rubber: You are resolute and adaptable. When things break or priorities shift, you rebound stronger. You treat setbacks as learning moments and move forward with grit.
  • One Formic: You operate without silos. You practice radical helpfulness, document clearly, and make clean handoffs. You assume positive intent and prioritize team success over individual credit.
