Job description

Chief Software Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Chief Software Engineer (Virtual) to support our Vehicle Management Software Team. This position will support the Boeing Defense Services (BDS) business organization.

We are seeking a Chief Software Engineer passionate about space and eager to work in a multi-disciplined, collaborative environment supporting the design, development, and deployment of vehicle management software for Boeing commercial and government space programs. This role requires proven experience across the software ecosystem-directing implementation, integration, verification/validation, and maintenance of complex systems while advising cross-functional teams on requirements, architecture, and test strategies. The successful candidate will demonstrate superior judgment, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills, influence adoption of emerging technologies, and mentor engineering peers to sustain and advance mission-critical capabilities.

In this role, the individual will direct the implementation, deployment, and maintenance of vehicle management software, ensuring compliance with internal and industry standards, processes, and regulations. The CSE will provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams-shaping system-level design and architecture, guiding verification/validation and integration, and advising stakeholders on requirements, test plans, and issue resolution. This position will also influence adoption of emerging technologies and oversee development of software documentation to support current and future aerospace programs

Position Responsibilities:

  • Directs implementation, deployment, and maintenance of vehicle management software systems in compliance with internal and industry standards, processes, and regulations.

  • Advises and partners with cross-functional engineering teams to identify, review, and refine vehicle management requirements and specifications.

  • Provides technical leadership for development of vehicle management software and coordinates integration of externally-developed functions into systems.

  • Consults on test plans and test cases to ensure thorough validation of vehicle management software.

  • Directs verification, validation, and system integration activities to ensure compliance with standards and successful system-level performance.

  • Provides technical guidance on software implementations during system-level design and architecture activities.

  • Directs investigation and resolution of software issues reported by users or discovered during operations.

  • Directs development and maintenance of software documentation, including design documents, user manuals, and technical specifications.

  • Influences research, evaluation, and adoption of emerging technologies, tools, frameworks, and development methods for vehicle management software.

  • Advises management on a wide range of technical and programmatic topics related to vehicle management software engineering.

This position has been identified as a virtual opportunity and will not require the selected candidate to relocate.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Ability to obtain Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance post-start for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship

  • 18+ years of experience designing and developing software for a real-time or non-real-time system

  • 18+ years of experience in software development using languages such as C/C++ coding or java/python script development

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science and 20+ years of related work experience OR Bachelor's Degree and 24+ years of directly related work experience OR 28+ years of related, relevant experience

  • Active Top Secret Clearance

  • Experience with the full software development lifecycle that includes requirements analysis through Formal Qualification

  • Experience using team collaboration tools including GitLab, Bitbucket, JIRA, and Confluence

  • Experience in embedded real-time software development

  • Experience automating software builds, unit tests, and integration tests using a DevOps tool chain

  • Experience speaking at formal Program events (PDR, CDR, QPMR, etc.)
