What are Remote BMS Design Engineers?

Remote BMS (Battery Management System) Design Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize battery management systems for various applications, such as electric vehicles or renewable energy storage, while working remotely. They focus on creating hardware and software solutions that monitor and control battery performance, safety, and longevity. Working remotely allows these engineers to collaborate with teams, create schematics, develop algorithms, and test systems using digital tools and communication platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote BMS Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote BMS (Building Management System) Design Engineer, you need expertise in electrical engineering, control systems, and HVAC principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with BMS software platforms like Siemens Desigo, Schneider EcoStruxure, or Honeywell, and proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD tools, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially when collaborating remotely with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to deliver robust, energy-efficient BMS solutions and ensure seamless project execution across diverse client sites.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote BMS Design Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote BMS Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams across different time zones, ensuring robust communication, and managing project timelines without in-person collaboration. To address these, leveraging project management tools, maintaining clear documentation, and scheduling regular virtual meetings are essential. Additionally, staying updated with the latest BMS technologies and cybersecurity standards is important for delivering reliable and secure systems. Developing strong self-motivation and proactive communication skills can greatly enhance success in this remote role.

Job description

Being an Oakwell engineer means being an owner's engineer and their trusted partner. Oakwell is a real estate and infrastructure firm that provides capital, engineering, and project delivery services to hospitals and universities. Our engineers take pride in their professional autonomy and combine technical leadership with strategic influence to shape major infrastructure initiatives from concept through completion.
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for producing high-quality mechanical designs โ€” drawings, calculations, specifications, and models โ€” for renovation and new-construction projects at Oakwell's hospital and university clients. Working under the direction of senior engineers, this person turns engineering strategy into detailed, constructable design documents that meet Oakwell's higher technical standard.
This is a hands-on design role for an engineer who takes pride in the craft of design โ€” sizing and selecting equipment, laying out systems, coordinating across disciplines, and developing complete construction documents for HVAC, hydronic, and plumbing systems in demanding institutional environments.
**This is a remote position with a preference for candidates located near Boston, MA**Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design
  • Develop mechanical system designs, load calculations, equipment selections, and layouts for HVAC, hydronic, and plumbing systems.
  • Produce scaled drawings and specifications in AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit for the installation and modification of mechanical systems.
  • Model systems and coordinate with electrical, plumbing, and structural disciplines to resolve clashes before issuance.
Analysis & Documentation
  • Prepare scopes of work, EMS points lists, and sequences of operation to support contractor and vendor pricing.
  • Review existing-condition drawings and document facilities and existing MEP systems during site assessments.
Collaboration & Support
  • Collaborate with facility staff to gather information on plant operations and system deficiencies.
  • Support senior engineers through design development, construction administration, and commissioning.
Qualifications & Experience
  • 5โ€“10 years of mechanical design experience, including experience on hospital and/or university projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; competency with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with energy modeling tools (e.g., eQUEST) a plus.
  • Availability to travel, as needed (approx. 20%).
What Makes You a Great Oakwell Teammate
  • Engineering Rigor: you produce detailed, high-quality drawings and specifications and welcome senior review.
  • Systems Thinking: you design integrative solutions rooted in existing conditions rather than oversized shortcuts.
  • You take ownership and demonstrate agency to drive your work forward, and collaborating in a team is second nature to you.

Benefits & Perks
Medical, dental & vision ยท Company-paid life and short/long-term disability insurance ยท HSA + medical and dependent-care FSAs ยท Voluntary accident & critical-illness coverage ยท 401(k) with company match ยท Paid company holidays and PTO ยท Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Location & Compensation
Remote, with travel to client sites as needed (~20%).ย  Competitive Compensation and Benefits.
Oakwell is an E-Verify and equal-opportunity employer.
